Mazda's come factory filled with Motorcraft 5w20 syn blend. I would use MC, or castrol gtx. extended drains i would use M1.

I called Ford and they advised me that the car has Motorcraft blend in the crankcase from the factory. I went ahead and bought Mobil 1 5w20 and a Mobil 1 filter, EricZoom, I do have a question for you since you have an 04 model, how easy is the filter to reach w/ a strap wrench?

Ours is an '04 Mazda6 wagon with the Duratec V6. The factory fill is indeed Motorcraft 5W-20. I am not Eric, but I can assure you that the filter is not easy to reach with a strap wrench. That is one reason we are using the K&N oil filter with the handy nut on top; the other is that the K&N has a high flow and therefore is less likely to have to go into bypass mode at high revs.

FWIW, a couple thousand miles back, we "upgraded" to GC (German Castrol, made by elves: there is an entire forum on this board about it), a 0w30 oil, and have seen no discernible decrease in gas mileage.

I have an '03 MPV with the Duratec 3.0 and I use Havoline 5W-20 with a PureOne filter and 6K OCI's. Seems to be working well for me. Stay away from Fram filters, they are junk.

I am going to go ahead and wait until 1500 miles and drain the factory fill and put the M1 in the car. What are the advantages to using the Fumoto drain valve?

There's not a lot of room to get the wrench in there, but it's doable. Like i said get the K&N filter, and you won't have to worry about that anymore. The Mobil 1 filter is good also, but the nut on the K&N is much easier to work with. The other thing you should do is cover the exhaust manifold (located under the filter) with foil, because when you remove the filter, oil will spill all over the place if your not careful.

Why ask for opinions if they're going to have no influence on your decision?
