I haven't been in one of the older ones... So maybe that is the difference.

All first gen Mazda 3s came from Japan and they rust badly and quickly without any additional rustproofing regimen.
The exception seems to be the Mazdaspeed 3.

The early generation CX5 was known for noise intrusion. Mazda set out to make them quieter with a stiffer chassis, more soundproofing and more seals. The 2017 and newer are very quiet. These techniques are being used on all their models now.

Maybe for modern engines.

LOTS and LOTS of older diesel ran with around 12:1..... maybe even lower
 
This Skyactive-X engine design is supposed to revolutionize the industry. The basic concept reminds me of the original Honda CVCC, although the compression ratio is a different factor.
I am very interested to see how this plays out, once past the initial bugs and hiccups.
 
I have to say even despite the two Mercedes in my sig, to this day my Mazda3's (2010 and 2014) were still my favorites. They honestly had the best blend of performance (2.5L), reliability, comfort and features for the price.

If something ever happens to my E350 I would very strongly consider another Mazda3 Grand Touring.

Really excited about Skyactiv-X, and the new Mazda3 hatch is absolutely beautiful. Would probably wait until the 2nd year of production before buying. Really hoping Mazda offers Skyactiv-X paired with an MT gearbox.
