When my plastic one broke on my Volvo, at the bolt holes, I took it to a shop that did rain gutters and central AC installations and they made one out of thin galvanized sheet metal. Very low cost and it never wore out. If you remove it you have lots of water and gunk getting to your power steering parts and this is not good. But it's your call.

I kept it on, but just cut a hole out so I won't have to remove it anymore.
