Mazda 3 skyactiv tick, something oil can't fix?

Worn past tolerance is a thing, it isn't an obscure thing, but a term in any mechanics shop to describe a host of issue. Nobody knows how that vehicle has been driven or if this is the case but the OP, so being all bold and saying no way is crazy considering the industry calls 75k miles high mileage. That isn't Burla's designation, but the designation of every oil company that makes a product specifically for this.

Wow random people in parking lots ask you whats wrong with yor car? Not a single person around here would ask what's wrong with my car even if it was misfiring on 2 cylinders with a couple of shot rod bearings.

Can you post a video of the terrible sounds? From your description is seems pretty bad, but you're already resigned to it not being a mechnical issue, rather something an oil can help? With the classic direct injector tick ruled out, what do you think the problem is that an oil will change?

How long after changing to Idemitsu did you hear the noise? You were running Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy then switched to a presumably much different formula with the Idemitsu. Not likely but possibly the cause? Both 0w20 right?

I honestly don't hear a tick in that video. I can hear "rotating" noise that to me just sounds like normal acessory sounds (the belt turning around the pulleys, etc). Maybe the cellphone video just doesn't capture it?

I did hear something in the video. It's louder near the exhaust manifold if I am seeing and hearing it right.

If I recall correctly there is a valve in the exhaust that operates until the engine is up to operating temperature. Then it opens to allow the manifold to do its scavenging thing that the headers were designed to do.

But, if that was the problem wouldn't a CEL be present?

Check for an exhaust leak as well.

Sounds like either an exhaust manifold leak - or a bearing gone on a rocker arm

Move a stick of burning incense around the exhaust manifold and see if you can see a leak.

Get a cheap Mechanics Stethoscope from Harbor Freight and listen around the engine for where it's coming from and help narrow down the cause.

It sounds like loud injectors. Adding something like a Redline Si-1 or Lucas Fuel System treatment to the fuel and filling up might quiet it down a tad because of the lubricant that's in these just to prove it's the injectors.

Does it change with the RPM? Slowly stepping on the gas?

Also if it is filter related I would try an OEM filter and see if it's any better but it really sounds like injector pulsing.

I like UncleDave's idea of using a incense stick.

also works looking for vacuum leak in swimming pool plumbing

You might be thinking of the L series engines. The SkyActiv engines are completely redone.

But does it still have the vanes in the intake manifold as does the Ford, Toyota, Honda, and BMW engines.

Das Injectors. Get someone to rev it up and let off, while you listen. The decel fuel cutoff will shut the injectors down until the RPMs get down to near idle again. You'll be able to hear them start up again
