I am surprised that NASA is willing to talk about this mysterious object. When astronauts in the past saw strange stuff it all went super secret. But in this case it may be something that came off of the shuttle or the external fuel tank. That is the likely answer because they are willing to talk about it. If it was something they had no clue about they would probably be using a secret military radio channel.
