May switch to Purolator

Instead of Hastings or Wix for my wife's 2003 Pathfinder. Nothing against the Hastings or Wix quality wise but I'm getting tired of spending the 7+ bucks for the Hastings and finding the Wix locally is becoming a chore. Even so, the Wix is still a 6 dollar filter.

Advance Auto has the Purolator for around $3.50, they have a good rep quality wise, good balance between flow and filtering ability and I THINK they'll have a better hold on their quality over Champion built filters (Supertech and AC Delco) which seem to be coming out of Mexico more and more these days.

I chopped open a Hastings LF 143 and a Purolator L10193. I didn't see anything to justify paying twice as much for the Hastings. I am using the ST.

Does Purolator use the clicker type bypass valve or the traditional spring loaded type like Wix?

Maybe there is a Motorcraft version with the bypass in the threaded end.

from my recollection, purolator tends to use a spring loaded one at the bottom, non threaded end.

Then it would be the same as Wix and Hastings in that regard. Purolator at $3.50 is looking better and better vs. the Hastings at 7 bucks.

Location of bypass valve in Purolators depends on the part#. The L25230 has it in the threaded end.

Some purolators reportedly have cardboard endcaps. If this is a concern for you, you may want to cut open the proper part number for your application.

The Wix bypass is not at the bottom of the can..it's at the threaded end. At least on my Ford application it is.

the hastings is a very wide open filter no restriction what so ever so is the k&n filter

On the FL820s, the Motorcraft filter has the bypass on the threaded end.

The Purolator filter equivalent (L24651) (and Pure One (PL24651)) have the bypass on the non-threaded end with a cheapie flat spring.

Interesting, since the Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator!

The Wix equivalent (51327) also uses a bypass in the non-threaded end, though I like the use of the coil spring loaded byapss valve. And the new local parts house just lowered their Wix price to 5.99 a filter.

Filters for my Jeep (Wix 51626) are weird too - Wix puts the byapss on the threaded end, Purolator doesn't (and neither did the Mopar filter when I got the Jeep).
