Is maxlife ATF a synthetic, syn blend , or what? What is your opinion of this ATF?

The one marked dexron/mercon is for Dexron3 and Mercon applications(not Mercon-V) is not a synthetic. Did a drain and fill on my GF's Mercury Mariner V-6 AWD at 30K with Maxlife. The quality of shifts was noticeably better but not dramatic, as the tranny already shifted quite well. And these qualities have remained intact for 9K miles since then. This tranny shifts quite well, but its best quality is it's eagerness to downshift when needed in the 40-55 MPH range, and do it quite smoothly. The best shifting domestic auto I have driven in a long time, maybe ever.

You guys should try the Amsoil ATF. I put that in my Hyundai and now it shifts velvety smooth. I can barely feel it, before they were very solid shifts and would jerk the seat underneath you.

I'm very very impressed with this fluid.

"Velvety smooth" shifts are not necessarily a good thing in an AT, in my opinion. It usually means that some slippage is happening during the shift. To each his own, though.

What are you going to poure it into?
If its a newer RAM theres better alternatives.ie any +4 oil

That is true of the product labeled Dexron/Mercon?

I called the company and they told me that MAx life DEX/MERC is a synthetic transmission fluid. I used this in my Trans am that had not seen a trans fluid change in some time and the car has 71,000 miles on it. The fluid has been changed twice so about 2/3 of the fluid has been replaced with max life because the thm350 trans holds about 12 qt. Do you think I will have an trouble with this? Its notv leaking and is running/shifting fine.

there is a "part #" on the label, call Valvoline and they will be able to tell you. the MaxLife ATF i purchased in Canada in late 2007 already had "synthetic" printed on label.

FWIW, here's a pic I just took of the Maxlife bottle, as it appeared around this time in '07. This was when it still carried the recommendation for VW, BMW, and others that it no longer lists on the bottle.

Says nothing about being a synthetic or semi-synthetic product.

HOLD THE PHONE!!!

I must correct myself. Upon further review, the 2007 vintage Maxlife bottle does indeed say that this fluid has synthetic base oils. Here's the pic:

the bottle I have looks the same and its 05/27/08 14:57 127 4. on the bottom. No recommendation for BMW, but VW pre 2006 & GM pre 2006. does have toyota T, T-III, T-IV. Nissan Matic D,J,K. Diamond SP-II, SP-III, ATF 3403-M. Honda Z1(except CVT)
So would this be synthetic?

Whew I feel better then. I checked their website and it did not list Mercon V.

I just had a flush/fill done at Valvoline Instant Oil Change and they told me the MaxLife ATF they use on all their cars would be fine. I was skepical because of their website info. I will have to e-mail them.

Thanks for the pictures!

Valvoline did e-mail me back and told me that their Dex/Mercon Maxlife is compatiable with Mercon V. It does say this in the "product info" area of the website.
