I just talked to my co-worker who is a VW guru. He says Valvoline says it's ok to use it, but he suggests O.E. fluid.

beast3300 and Ike_Clanton,

Thanks for the suggestions.

Disregarding the one-line quips that really have no place on this forum, Valvoline issued a letter confirming MaxLife and Merc V for LT-11471 or whatever that spec for Passat/A4 is. It is not approved for the trans in Jetta/Golf. A google should find the actual document.

fwiw, I have six bottles here for my 2007 Accord, very good stuff. The nice thing about the Honda is the drain and fill requires only a 3/8" ratchet and a funnel. No special tools, not even a socket!

Valvoline has like 6 different 'blends' of Maxlife out there, some of it meets, some it doesn't. Seems the stuff that meets the Viscosity Requirements of Dex VI, doesn't meet the VW 4 speed requirements.

If you go look at the Valvoline MSDS website, you'll see just how many different ones there are.

I live in Canada, so we tend to be a little behind the ball when it comes to the oils changing, just this last time I noticed it didn't say anything on the jug about not meeting the 'viscosity requirements' for Dex VI.

The Spec that the VW says is: LT71141

As far as I can tell it's basically a Synthetic Dex III-H(or whatever the last spec was).

the only change i know of is when valvoline maxlife atf reduced its viscosity (to 6.2)and added dex VI,mecon sp,mercon lv, and toyota ws, to the recommended for list.

it has always been a highly friction modified fluid (before and after the viscosity change)

perhaps you bought some of the old stock. with out the new low viscosity "suitable for's" on the back of the bottle?
