Today while buying wheel cleaner, at Advance Auto Parts. I took my normal trip to the oil isle to look at Maxlife Syn10/30. I have the 10/40 dino in my 99 Passat 30V to see if it helps with my camshaft tensioner leaks. To my suprise the 10/30 which I knew was VW 502/505 is also 505.01. I thought a select few oils were 505.01 and I would never think Valvoline Maxlife 10/30 would; considering no of the durablends have meet this spec. So maybe once my stash of Havoline HM and Gold GC are gone this might be my new oil of choice. P.S. would PZ Plat. 5/50 be ok to run in a N.E. Ohio winter ?

You're not going crazy. I recently wrote Valvoline since my dad bought a new TDI and he told me 2 months ago the new "SM" rated Maxlife synthetic is 505.01 certified. They're working on the Synpower to meet it.

I recently put in MaxLife Synthetic 5W 30 in my 99' Passat 1.8T with 131,000 miles. It too has the cam tensioner leak. After a few months and few thousand miles it seems to using a bit less oil.

This is supposed to be a very good oil. I'm going from the Synpower 5W40 to this one.
