Max & Extended Protection: Racing vs Street Oil's?

Yes, another Engine Oil thread, indeed!

Friends, please help me out. As you know there are all sorts of synthetic oils out there. I am personally a GC lover!

A friend of mine is trying to convince me that not all exotic oil's necessary provide better protection in all circumstances. I have been aware of Amsoil for a very long time, & the claims they make regarding their product.

Is it correct that Red Line, Royal Purple & Motul are oil's made for Racing/Track Car's & are primarily not designed to provide protection for longer periods of time for a vehicles whose engines do not get rebuild on routinely basis and whose engines experience many short distances stop & go usage and whose ignition gets turn on and off many many times/day....

After reading as much as I can, also being a chem. eng. grad myself, i have narrowed down my choices to "Red Line & Motul"! (are they good choices? yes or no, why?)

but my friend says these oils are not primarily/fundamentally designed for conventional type of usage nor is their additive package, hence they might rather be harmful and therefore Amsoil is the way to go.

I like to hear what everyone has to say about this, whether or not is there any truth to it that if these oil are meant for Racing cars hence will not be providing as much protection as let say an oil like GC! (since it is not a racing oil)

As I understand it the main difference is a lack of detergents in the race oils and other additives like corrosion inhibitors. But the race oils have alot more Zn and particularily P.

All three-Redline, Royal Purple, and Motul, all have street formulated oils.

I am just wondering, would these oils provide my engines with "better" protection for more "longer" periods of time than Amsoil &/or German Castrol 0W-30?

or else what's the point of buying these by going out of the way and pay more as well.

The cars we have are not used for racing but are heavily used day in and out and I want them to last long and well!

As I have been told that it all comes down to additive packages these oils have and wonder keeping what type of usage these additive packages were formulated....I just like to make my mind up!

Forget race oils for non racing applications. The issues that arise in racing rarely do on the street.

Redline and Motul make some great street oils but they are relatively expensive. For street use less expensive oils like GP III based PP will protect just as well at a fraction of the cost.

I too am a fan of GC. Because of it's robust nature It also stands up well to track use which I can attest to.

thanx Caterham....those oils are expensive...especially when application is not to use it on track & race etc..i love GC i am happy with it...but one would always wanna know if there is something more better and at the same time will it save money?

I always had amosil in my mind...something I have tried once...liked it...but wanted to find out more about Red Line and Motul....and if they are something way better than GC and Amsoil?

In the past I never really played into the whole Amsoil thing, but I'm getting ready to buy some. From everything I've seen I think if you're goin for long OCI's it's going to be hard to beat because of there very high TBN's.

I'm a very long time user of Royal Purple, so we will see. I've been very happy with Royal Puple. Looking to try something different. Always trying to get better.
