My wife's old Sentra takes Matic-D , that can only be bought at the dealer... Is this just a basic fluid in sheep's clothing? Any alternatives?

Yep, it's basically Dexron III. I'm using MaxLife in my Infiniti spec'd for Matic-D.

maxlife or Castrol Import, high mileage or multi would work. As mentioned it's essentially Dex 3. Given you said it's "old" I would use maxlife.

Matic D/DexIII not tough ATF spec to meet. MaxLife Syn a readily available option, decent value in the gallon jug. Castrol Transmax Full Syn another option but now seems hard to find. Castrol Import Multi Vehicle another option. IMO, anything saying Dex III which would include the common Dex/Merc options like Valvoline or even WM Super Tech should work fine.

MaxLife, Castrol MV Import are you best choices.
Nissan transmissions love MaxLife and Castrol, I have tried both and both with very good results.

Analytically, old NissanMatic D was almost a Dexron III clone.

But please, flow it in gently. NissanMatics prefer a slow, loving, and tender reinstatement of ATF.

haha, make sure to snuggle with the quarts prior to pouring.

I used Peak, MaxLife, and Transmax ATF in my Sentra and it shifted like [censored]. Upshifts flared and/or slow shifting. Left the MaxLife in it because I was getting sick of changing it and 20k miles later it started shifting normal again. The trans doesn't seem to like ATF that's to slippery; after shearing down some it shifted normal again. Now I'm afraid to change it again.
