Master cylinder rod obs ford f150

I noticed I had some clutch pedal play on my 96 f150 with rhe M5OD so I stuck my head down there to inspect. I found the rod had a bad bushing which is what I expected it was almost off its attaching point. I unhooked it from the pedal completely and noticed the rod come out pretty easily. Is that normal? I assumed the rod shouldn’t come out of the master cylinder that easily? I stuck it back in and popped the linkage all the way on and zip tied it until I can get to fixing it. Originally I was planning on just a bushing since the rod end looked ok minus the bushing, but with how easy it came out of the master cylinder Portion I’m not sure if I should just replace the entire master cylinder. Your thoughts? I haven’t really tested how firmly attached the rod should be so I don’t have a great comparison point.

I would start with checking the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If low, the throw rod may not be returning to its proper position. There will be a rubber cup under the cap which you will have to remove to see the fluid level. The level should be at the ring. It takes DOT 3 brake fluid. If you are have disengagement problems where the clutch disengages when the pedal is near the floor, the pedal box bushings may need replacing as well. I would also consider upgrading that chinsy plastic throw arm bushing with this.

Wes over at Watch Wes Work did one of those on an older (1997) SuperDuty, the F150 is probably similar. The SD at least appears to have some form of clip in the firewall.

Around 220k I had to actually replace the whole pedal mount assembly on my 88. The bushings had failed long ago and the hole in the pedal mount was worn oblong. Something to look at on yours. Its been long enough since I messed with mine I don't remember the details on the rod itself to the clutch master cylinder.

Edit:

Looked up the part and they must have updated it for the newer body style. On my 88 this was one big aluminum casting..
