Here is the scoop.

2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible with 2.5. Used to have a slight tick for a few seconds then it went away. Tried Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 and it got bad. Switched to QS Ultimate Durability 5-30 and a quart of Rislone. After 1500 miles nothing.

Since I changed the oil only 1500 miles ago I wanted to go cheap and try this. I went to Autozone and got a 5+ jug of 5w-20 Castrol GTX (thought I grabbed the 5-30) and a qt of MMO.

I changed the oil but reusing my Pure One filter by dumping out the old oil.

This is the first time I have tried this in 48 yrs of living.

I hope it stops the tick.

**MY manual says the valve lash adjusters are prone to clogging. I wonder if Mobil 1 High Mileage broke something loose in there and plugged 1 or 2 up?

You changed the oil but didn't bother changing the filter? Why? That doesn't make any sense to me, even with the low miles. ????

In any event, qt of MMO and the remainder filled with fresh motor oil should help clear up a stuck/clogged lifter if that's the source of your tick.

I didn't want to change the filter because it is a Pure One filter and was hardly used. Plus I wanted to use it so if the tick went away it would not be a "filter" issue.

Without going into too much detail (though I could), what you did with that oil filter is the single best way to cause it to release a portion of the trapped contaminants (including bits of sludge, if they were there) directly back into your engine the next time you start up.

If you aren't planning to change the filter, just unscrew it enough to let trapped oil leak out, then tighten it down again.

Overall though, it sounds like you are making progress. It wouldn't hurt to try a flush product like LubeGard, Amsoil, Auto-RX (lots of people swear by that one).

Now that you've got the new cocktail in, a nice, long, hot highway drive would go a long way to clean things up.

I'm not a fan of reusing filters, but....Give the MMO a chance to work its magic and don't be afraid to leave it for a full OCI. Remember some of the other products that are designed to clean slowly can take up to 4 OCI's or more to do their job. The key is to be patient, and give the MMO a little time to work.

Exactly. MMO didn't work in a couple of days so I'm going to buy another product and give THAT one a few months to work its magic.

Dude, you are dancing around all over the place. 10-30, 5-30, 5-20 + 20% MMO.

Just run what the user manual says to run, and you should be A-OK.

I'd say in 2000 miles or less MMO would do the trick. If you have the time and the money to try something else, go for it. To bad you're selling the MMO short. In the end its clean engine we're after.

It calls for 5w30 which is what I normally run. The Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 was all I could get. The 5w-20 I just got was by accident, but I was too far into the change by then and I figured it wouldn't hurt with cold weather coming.

I would not run the MMO with 5w-20 oil in your engine that wants a 5w30. The MMO is about a straight 5 weight and would concern me that it would dilute the hot viscosity of your oil further. You are already a grade below spec and the MMO might thin it out more when its warm. It wont hurt its cold viscosity but it might thin is down on the hot viscosity. MMO told me to run one grade thicker oil such as a 10w-40 oil and it would end up more like a 5w30 with the 20 percent dilution. I know when it added it to my wife's grand prix with 5w30 and drained it hot, it did seem a bit thin to me.

Well too thin of oil is too thin of oil no matter how hard you drive it. You could cause accelerated wear if the engine is not made for that thin of oil.

Take the 5-20 back and get the 5-30, then you can put in the MMO without worry!

The Jetta is about 1000 miles into its current fill with GTX 10W40 and 16 oz of MMO. So far it seems to be doing fine. Ive got some Mobil 1 10W40 HM but may do another round of MMO and GTX HM 10W40. This time i may add a full qrt vs just a half of a qrt. That will put me right at the 25% limit.

Sounds like a plan. Are you trying to resolve an issue, or is this some preventative maint/clean up?

Its always had a valve ticking noise. Im hoping to quiet it down some. I did a clean and rinse phase of auto rx and that did nothing. Getting things cleaner is always a good thing.

I would be surprised if the MMO would work if the Auto-RX didn't. Auto-RX may be my next step if this doesn't work as replacing valve lash adjusters just doesn't sound that fun.

Have you given MMO a try? I would say probably 9 of 10 people I suggested trying MMO for getting rid of a lifter noise were successful. On occasion it has taken more than one OCI. One of my buddies it didn't work for ended up replacing his cam and lifters, which were shot when he pulled them out.
