Mercruiser recommends 3 different types of grease for gimbal, splines, and fittings. I have found Pennzoil Premium Plus Multo-purpose marine grease that can be used for wheel bearings, and also mentions other bearings such as splines, bushings, pin and bearings. Would this 1 grease be sufficient to replace all 3 of the ones that Mercruiser recommends? I just find it hard to believe that these are that different, and keep in mind that I live in Indiana, store the boat in-side when not in use, and put about 20 hours a year on the boat.

Thanks for the advice.

You sound like me on the boating hours. At first, I was really picky about what grease for what, but over the years, I've simply used the Pennz. Marine lube for just about everything EXCEPT the spline grease. That stuff, you want a super-duper water resistant grease, and the stuff Merc makes for it works well. I use that grease for anything that has a grease zerk. Gimbals, outdrives, axels, you name it, it goes in and haven't had a problem grease related ever. The maine thing, is make sure it's water resistant.

You need a different grease for the gimbal and U-joints. An automotive wheel bearing grease is what is required. If you use other marine grease like Merc 2-4C the oil will separate from the grease due to the high speed revolutions of the drive shaft.

You'll see the oil in the bellows when you take off the out- drive and possible thinks its from a leaking upper seal, when it is fact from the grease.
