I have an 05 5 speed Vibe/Corolla with around 51k miles(bought new) (original clutch). In the 4.5 years I have had the car I have used the Specialty Formulations fluid, Amsoil and for the past couple of years the Castrol Syntorq. I think I like the Castrol the best and was thinking of putting in new fluid this fall. For those of you who have used more than one transmission fluid in such a car what do you like the best?

Don't those take 75W90? I used M1 75w90 in my 06 Vibe..

According to alldata for an 05 Vibe

"Transmission Fluid
Grade GL-4 Synthetic
Viscosity 75W-90
"

Such an M1 product I believe is not available in Canada.

I've used factory fill (duh), Mobil 1 and Amsoil in the 05 Corolla.

The factory fill was in for 22k and working fine, I wanted to get in some new fluid and put in the Mobil 1. The shifting was the same for a few miles and around 30-40k later it was pure [censored]. Worst fluid I've ever used.

Put in the Amsoil and its still shifting just great almost 100k miles later.

Take care, Bill

Hey Bill,

I did try the AMSOIl 75W-90 API GL-4 and didnt like it as well as the way to pricey Castrol Syntorq.

Btw, have you had the same fill of Amsoil for 100k miles i.e. you have never replaced it with new AMSOIL gear fluid?

Yep, I put it in around 65k and I'm coming up on 150k so its closer to 90k miles.

I went 292k miles on the FACTORY FILL on the 1986 Jetta.

Changed it a few years ago because I felt guilty.

Did not improve it any....

But yes, same and only Amsoil fill I've done in the car.

My last order with Pablo I bought 2 extra quarts for the next change but they are still sealed on the shelf.

Take care, bill

With your example Bill I think I might hold off as I put in the Castrol Syntorq about 2.5 years and maybe 20k miles ago. Maybe Ill put in clean stuff next summer.

20k miles? Unless it was the factory fill and you wanted to get the break in metals out, I would NOT change it for a long time unless it was not performing well (like the Mobil 1 I was using).

Take care, bill

Nope. The factory fill was removed early on and I have changed it a couple of times in the first two years and this latest fill of Syntorq is 2.5 years old. So I will heed your advice and stay with it till next summer.

Right. I think I now recall reading about such a combination for use in transmission calling for 75W-90.

Does this mean we would be unable to use the RLI 75W90 GL-5 fluid?

Since a 90wt is required, I would use Redline MT90 or Amsoil MTG as is without any mixing to thin it out. Any manual fluid will shear soon enough.

Toyota usually spec's a GL4 "or" GL5 90wt.

Toyota does have a new MTF LV. But, I can't find a PN for it. It is supposedly the new fill for several manuals for less wear(better basestocks/additives) and better MPG(thinner fluid). Not sure if its a 75w85 that many manufacturers stepped down to instead of the 80w90's used over the years.

I hate it when an automaker uses an incomplete weight. 75w what?
75w80
75w85
75w90
75w100000000

Call your local Scion dealer for a PN of this fluid. Bet that they are too dumb to figure it out.
I had to argue with the parts clowns for the 75w85 GL5 diff gear oil. It doesn't exist blah blah blah until I asked them to look up a PN. I hate parts clerks and their monkey managers. BTW, I can't find the PN for the 75w MTF-LV which makes me wonder if you have to purchase a barrel. Remember when WS was only available in imported $50 per gallon tins???

Well, it IS supposed to be a lifetime fill. Even says so on the drain and fill plugs! :) Yeah, right. Gonna replace it as soon as I figure out what I can put in. I got a bogus answer from Scion/Toyota when I inquired about it and was referred to the dealer. Haven't been by to check yet. Only have about 12k on the car. Gonna swap at 15k and again at 30k, then run 30k OCI's.
