Mavis to buy Pep Boys

It looks like the end of Pep Boys as Carl Icahn is selling off the assets to Mavis Tire. I can't say that it's much of a loss to consumers since Pep Boys discontinued retail auto parts sales several years ago and transitioned to tire and basic maintenance services only.

I used to love going to my local Tempe,AZ Pep Boys. They had some good service guys too. Oh well, None around here in Kentucky anyway.

They'd mail out "$5 coupons" which made their oil change packages competitive in price.
Otherwise, they were the lowest form of FLAPS.
They opened a new one near me with 7 bays.
During one visit a senior lady, who told me she had worked all over the county, whispered to me to stay away.
This was the same location which inspected recently replaced brakes on a friend's car and charged her $1,600 for new brakes.
The antagonistic slime who work there also pipe wrenched a Fumoto valve on the same car.

My biggest complaint was how every Sunday they'd have a full page of coupons in the Chicago Tribune, but none of the stores would honor them.

My 1st job as a teen was Pep Boys. I worked the parts counter back when we had paper books to look up parts. They were decent then and sold quality parts but the service center was just as poor as any typical chain repair shop. Before they stopped selling parts the stores were terrible - more dirtbikes and junk than auto related stuff. I saw the end coming - hate to see them go but they were on the road to the end for the last 20 years.

Years ago the location I visited now and then had good oil clearances.
Haven't been in a Pep Boys in at least ten years.
