In my ever-expanding quest to fix what isn't broken, I thought I had found the best oversized filter on the planet for my VW 1.8T. According to just about every post that I've read on the internet, a Purolator L40316 oil filter is supposed to be a re-badged Mann/Hummel W950/4. Many sites had pictures of the filter, in fact. After searching in vain for an Advance Auto Parts store that stocked this filter (none did), I broke down & had them order one for me. I figured for $7.75 & a 24-hour turn-around time, I would have the ultimate oil filter, the "Mannolator".

So today at lunch, I go to pick up my filter at AAP. I was all excited about playing with my new toy.......until I took it out of the box. A re-badged Mann/Hummel?.......Hardly

It was a plain old white Purolator, complete with dome-end bypass valve. It doesn't even have the Purolator emblem on it. It just had the part # computer-printed on the side. It also appears to be very old. The box looked like it had been handled by a bunch of monkeys. It actually had tape holding it closed, & the date is 1997. I'll post pics later.

Oh well, my rant is off now. Thanks for reading my stupid, useless post.

wayne,

Don't forget that since you had to special order this oil filter, it was a VERY slow selling item sitting on the back shelf for years.

Use it for a long UOA and then cut it open.

WW..something doesn't add up.

Mann has a Green and Yellow box. I'll call our Mann supplier and have him go check his stock. Something tells me it won't be a rebadged Purolator box with a white filter in it.

I'm travelling tommorrow so it might be Monday before I have an answer.

I suspect your problem is the parts store you bought the filters from. Something is fishy..imho.

ww, don't you have a Pep Boys near you?

The white L40316/"ape mishandled" boxed

ones is the old, old crappy Wix sourced filters that I avoid from PBY.

The L40316 Mannolators I usually get has date stamps(enclosed in a white square) of "201", "301" & "401" (gloss black finish)..the most recent is the "205" edition(semi-gloss black).

Some L40316 are sourced from Knecht Mahle(have 2, in flat black finish)..though both makes are robustly built, German made and are packaged in the usual blue Purolator box.

p.s. Prior to the PBY Mannolators, I used to get the Mann boxed W950/4s for $10 a pop online(shipping inclusive).

Filter guy,

By "Re-badged Mann", these two pictures should explain what I meant. The filter below is what I wanted, but not at all what I got.

Here's my opinion:

Purolator sourced that part number L40316 from Mann at one time. So it was a genuine "rebadged" Mannolator..

When you ordered L40316, you were expecting the Mann filter.

I would hazard a guess that the volume has increased whereby Purolator now either builds that filter themselves or sources from a different supplier. As Mann would be a black filter.

Or Purolator decided to change suppliers to save on acquisition costs.

Obviously, from the pictures, things have changed.

WW..check your PM..

FG,

I don't think demand for this filter has increased at all; I think I just got an old filter. Take a look at the box from the first pictures in this thread. That is Purolator's OLD box. They haven't used that box in a few years.

The two Purolator L40316s I bought late last year at PepBoys are definitely Manns with stick-on Purolator labels, as depicted in Wavinwayne's post.

I've seen the Mann pic above before..was taken from Club B5 allegedly posted by one of the orig Mannolator users(PMed me one time regarding filter).

The media has probably been fossilized. So then it really would go well in Mustang_Cougar's Purolator museum, in an exhibit with some used "dino" oil from Fred Flintstone's car.
