Replaced the air filter on my TDI with a Mann for the first time in about five years. I've been using Wix/Napa religiously and haven't had an issue.
The Mann doesn't "quite" fit the box without bending in the middle and stressing the edge for a perfect seal.
Customary or did I just get a "bad" one?
Box said "Made in Germany". FWIW

Yeah I was thinking about that. The box number was right, but I didn't check the number on the filter. Will see if it matches.

It did match. I looked back on the website where I bought the filter and it did state "This is a tight fit". So the application must be the issue not the QC at Mann.

I don't know if it was right or wrong, but the supplier stated for the TDI and the Mann filter: "This is a tight fit".
Wix did not state anything (at least that I was able to find), and the fit was not an issue.

ChiTDI. I just installed a Mann air filter in my BMW.
The fit was nice and snug but what I found was I had a
harder time clamping down the top section of the filter
box. I had to take out the whole filter box from the engine
compartment which then made it easier to close. I think the
top seal is just a bit higher than the OEM filter. I think
it's a great filter and great in price (half the cost of OEM).

No argument there boss. I'm pleased with it as a top notch air filter - filtering and price. I just got away from them for a few years using Wix and didn't have the fit issue. Or just don't remember having it. When my Wix were used up I went back to Mann and thought I got a bad one. Taking out the air box and getting a snug fit with the new filter is the best way to go, as you said. The height of the plastic edging maybe the issue. As long as the filtering is good, I'm happy. I just panicked when I thought I got a bad one.
