All previous air filters of my 11 years old E430 was Hengst and it fits fine. This time I tried Mann air filter part number C34175 to see if anything difference. The main difference is it doesn't fit the air box because it's about 0.8" longer.
According to Mann website, the filter for my car is C34175 and both Amazon and Rockauto list that filter for my car. I bought it probably more than a year ago from Amazon along with something else to get over $25 for free shipping. I left the filter in the garage without test fit, because if Mann says it fit and both Amazon and Rockauto list it for my car, what's can be wrong.
I was wrong when I trusted the reputable manufacture and two large retailers, no way I can squeeze that filter into the air box, if it is 0.1-0.2" larger I may be able to force it in. As of now I have to re-use the 30+k miles air filter, it is a little dirty when I tap it on the ground only little dirt and sand came out, and still usable for another 4-5k miles.
This is one of the problems with buying parts online, you bought something thinking that it works but when you use it it doesn't. Also, buying too far ahead of time may not be such a good idea, for reason that return window at Amazon is only 2-3 months.
I emailed MANN complaining about wrong air filter fitment for my E430. I also found that they list another air filter part number C32164 for 2000 E320, it is 0.8" shorter than C34175 and the same dimension for width and high, as far as I know both E430 and E320 of the year 2000 use the same air and oil filter. This air filter C32164 seems to be the right one for my E430.
