From all of the reviews of read here me thinks I will be making the switch to RP after my Auto-RX "rinse" stage is complete. I've been using M1 full synthetic since I bought the car 17k mi ago, and it's all I've used in my cars for a long while now. After reading all the good reviews I think I should give RP a try. Good move?

RP is good oil. Some of their oils are better than others. I still think M1 is the best synthetic on the market ALL things considered.

If you used M1 religiously, then why do you think you need to clean the engine? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

i've only owned the car since 83k. the dirty engine was evidenced by the burnt oil stained(would not wipe off even) onto the dipstick and oil cap buttox. wide open throttle was unpleasantly choppy with inconsistent feedback from the engine. Auto-Rx cleared that up, in addition to netting me 2mpg more within 500mi of treatment #1.

i don't expect the RP to do any cleaning, it's just regular synthetic no?

It's more of a boutique oil, don't get me wrong, it's GOOD stuff. Little more expensive than M1, but good stuff none the less. Look up some of the UOA's on this stuff. Some engines like it, some don't. In fact, try and match UOA's with your particular engine and maybe you can find one that will work even better for cheaper price.

What viscocity are you going to use? You going to use the 10W-30? RP does not provide much data on their oils. I don't know much about them.

This up coming Sunday ad's have Pepboys with RP on sale. Stock up if you are going to get into this oil.

I think you are doing the right thing, gr8gatzby. Royal Purple is a much better oil than Mobil1. However, Mobil have a much bigger marketing budget, so very few people know that. I have benn using Mobil1 for several years, before I found out about RP. I will not go back. I do 20000 mile OCI with a turbo-diesel and it works great, according to my OLM and the Mercedes-dealer. I should mention that both my cars do not use oil between oilchanges. These cars together, are driven 60-65000 miles(100-105000km)during a year.

thanks for all the feedback, i certainly feel more comfortable about the switch now.

in response to the viscosity question, me thinks i'll stay at 5w30, as this seems optimum for the charlotte, nc, climate.

Wow, a pretty bold statement. I've been around here since this board's inception and I have seen NO definitive evidence that any of the PAO oils are better than any other: RP, Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc ...

As long as I knew a each of the synthetic oils I was considering was actually PAO, I'd get the cheapest and most conveniently available.

And when using RP, I'd watch for premature thinning and it's effect on my motor.

I think RP SAE 10W30 & 5W30 would be great if fortified with LC. There is a shearing problem, but whatever AW suite they use seems to compensate for it on UOA's.

As noted the heavier 40's weights have been used with good effect.

RP Racing#21 is very stout stuff as well, it is 5W30 if I recall correctly,

They Fully Synthetic, not blend oils. yes Racing 21 is 5w30 same VI.

Anything you require is on there site, and for more indepth details about there products...

My wife just put her first 500 miles on RP 5w-30 in the family Accord (v6, 169K miles) and I did an oil change this morning into my 89 Mazda RX-7 GTUs now that the new engine is fully broken in.......Royal Purple Racing 21. Use it in my "other" autocross Suzuki Swift GT as well, UOA comes back perfect every time (5K OCI, 36K miles on 1.3L DOHC run hard always).

Good stuff, not for everyone, but good so far for me in several rotaries, family car, and our tow rig for up to 19K OCI (ford turbo diesel, RP 15w-40) all with good results.
