Just got a Purolator Pure One Gold Filter--it's the one with the yellow-tight-grip paint.

The problem is that FLAKES of this paint usually falls off the outer casing of the filter and right into the filter and when installed it mixes with oil and goes right into your engine.

I just bought two online from AAP and went to pick up they gave me one like above and one blue one. The gold one did have some overspray but did not get on or inside the seal nor did it look as bad as the others i found on the board so i scraped off what i could and used it.

How do the blues compare to the golds?

Usually? i never see this "usually", it's been talked about before no issues,no problems,,IF a flake did make it into your engine it would hardly hurt a thing.

Hey

I little gold fairy dust is no big deal

It's like Fram's orange can. Show me where the gold dust banging around inside your engine has resulted in issues. There's your proof right there!!!

I noticed this when I bought a PureONE filter a while back. Ever since I've started pouring some oil in and dumping it back out.

And those few little flakes could easily cause some damage. Think of how tight the clearances are in the oil pump and rod/main/camshaft bearings.

+1 I currently have 3 PL14610 in my stash purchased from AAP in the last year or two, no "flakes" in any box. All the filters come thread end down in the box so I'm not sure how all the flakes fall off right into the filter. I've never had that issue, nor would I know how they would fall "right into the filter" even if they did fall off.

In early production of the P1, there was some overspray issues. One BITOG poster emailed Puro and they sent replacements.

I like the texture for ease of hand tight installation.

Simple solution, don't like em switch brands. Thanks for the tip, but I'll continue to use the P1 with confidence.

But it is true, that this has been discussed ad nauseam. Perhaps the "flakes" aren't just about the texture.

Hey saying get a Fram XG, if someone is worried about the flakes on the P1.

The alternative. I'm about to install one if I ever get around to changing the oil on the toyota - The snowblower oil is sooo gooood I dont want to dump it out and be back to same old noise and low power problems again.

mareakin: This is much ado about nothin' IMO. Any "flakes" of paint would immediately be filtered out. Go buy a Deathly Orange Can if you don't like the gold paint.FWIW--Oldtommy

Even the ones in the center well? Don't they have to take a trip around the board and pass GO to get filtered?

Depends on your definition of immediately.

Classic PR statement: "First I think we need to define "completely destroyed" before I could comment".

lol,i'll stick with my flakes.

why not just buy a Bosch Premium instead? It's a P1 clone, without the yellow gripy stuff..............It looks way better without it too!

I am taking the PureOne off my Subaru today. It is leaking like crazy. I had to add a half quart yesterday and today I am going to get rid of it before going to the dealer for warranty work. It has 2,300 since the last oil change. The subaru black filters never had issue, but then subaru discontinued them and went to the blue filters that leaked a little bit. Because the blue leaked I decided to try a non-factory brand filter and bought a PureOne. It really leaks. I tried to tighten it more two times now and it won't budge.
