Maintenance for a hard working PS pump...

When I was younger, I had a power steering failure. Being stupid and broke, I drove that thing with no power steering for a year. I'm not anxious to ever repeat that again, even for a few hours.

My arms got much stronger, though!

A friend of ours did that with their Dodge minivan (drove around with no pwr st fluid for quite awhile) and the pump shaft got so worn with no fluid in it that it nearly came apart. Then he had the pump replaced finally, and then the steering gear began to leak profusely. I guess that all the final pump wear trash from running low or without fluid got pushed into the steering gear, which promptly began to leak and malfunction the next day!

Recently tried the RP ATF in my PS unit in the Lincoln, and it works extremely well.

Both Amsoil Universal ATF and Redline D4 have made its way in my Tacos PS system both work great. It does say to use AFT of the cap.

My gut says "sure". I didn't think twice of having my mothers PS fluid changed out in her 86 Corsica ..did wonders for the cold performance. Amsoil now spec's their synthetic PS fluid ..but I think that's more to allow nervous types to switch.

I could surely be off base ..but unless there's some seal compatibility issue (unlikely) I don't really think it matters much beyond the respective fluid's viscosity and VI differences.
