Today I had the pleasure of seeing this locomotive barreling down the tracks pulling about 10 old passenger cars. It was traveling much faster than I anticipated and was beyond description. It came from Portland Oregon for a local train festival and was on it's first leg back, with a stop in Chicago. Simply breath taking. You can read more about it's trip to Michigan here: http://www.trainfestival2009.com/4449.php Here's a picture of our local beauty, the 1225, also at the festival:

A couple of times, I've had the privilege of standing by the track as the UPRR Challenger went barrelling past. Once I was expecting it... the second time a few days later (it was heading back north after stops in San Antonio) was a complete surprise and I just happened to be waiting at the grade crossing. Old locomotives are amazing things. http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/excurs/up3985.shtml
