I save the powerful magnets that you find in things these days, like old Optical drives and such. I use them and some epoxy to make my magnetic drain plugs. The material they pick up is an ultra fine dark grey particle. No big chunks. I'd say it's the stuff that would get through an oil filter and settle in the bottom of the pan. Those small particles probably wouldn't harm anything, but I feel better knowing where they are. 
Mag plugs work best as a diagnostic tool, vs cleaning the oil - careful if you make it yourself you won't lose the mag. Sure they'll pull a little bit.
If you want the mag to really work put it in the stream like linxtex demonstrates, or on the outside of the filter a ring of cheap neodymiums works fine as does an expensive filtermag.

I use Dimple Magnetic in every engine I own. I also highly recommend there use. They will not only pick up more then the usual drain plug magnet but large meta particles as well. I change my oil and filter at each 3000 miles, below is from an older service.

I make my own. I buy a drain plug and drill it on a drill press, and jb weld in a samarium cobalt magnet. Samarium cobalt magnets do not lose as much gauss when hot as other magnets do.

I use Dimple and Votex plugs. They’re the strongest that I’ve found. The Gold Star plug lost a lot of its strength.
I use them in the engine, AT, and differential.
There’s always some metal on the plug. I’d rather the metal be on the plug than in the fluid.

Not having a Magnetic drain plug will be something you will never see a difference in engine life over the ownership of the vehicle. The more stuff you can get out of the oil the better but if you pay attention to the million mile vehicle reports they aren't running trick oil filters or magnetic drain plugs nor bypass filter. Just regular oil changes and oil filters that don't regularly fail. The Air cleaner and a sealed intake is probably the #1 thing promoting long engine life .
Magnets pick up the fine stuff that will pass through the filter pores they don't discriminate. I got impatient before getting a plug and instead of waiting for the OC, stuck a half dozen ~30lb pull neodymium bars on the filter. They still have enough pull that I can't pull them off before burning my fingers, that's good enough for me. If it doesn't do a lick of good, well, that's not true, I sleep better at night

But I no longer use it, because I replaced it with one of these. Works like a champ. I now have them on my Jeep, Toyota, and my truck. It makes oil changes easier and completely mess free. No tools except for a filter wrench, and you never burn your fingers, or spill a drop.

I have to wonder... If these magnetic drain plugs were so beneficial, why don't car manufacturers install them at the factory?
Does anyone know if any manufacturer use them? I would imagine the uber expensive Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo/you-name-it engines might, if they helped.

Cost to benefit. The engines last through warranty, so no reason to spend an extra penny. Now interestingly, a lot of oems use a magnet in the trans pan and some differentials.

I don’t have any specific examples off the top of my head but I have come by them over the years. A few on cars/truck but more common on motorcycles, quads, etc.
In every case there was very fine metallic sludge on the end. I’ve never seen any large particles myself.
I think the reason they aren’t common from OEM is simply a cost/benefit thing. They aren’t needed and like others have posted the trend from the OEM is less about making your engine and drivetrain last forever but hoping it makes it through warranty.
They are pretty common from the factory, but like lots of factory parts they usually aren't premium products. The aftermarket units are 2X or more in strength.
