magnetic oil drain plug

what's everyones thought's on magnetic oil drain plugs. worth the money or not?

Hi,
turbaccord1 - I like them and have used them for decades - either from after market sources or as OEM

I recently purchased a new Suzuki motorcycle and all three drain plugs had embedded magnets

I'd prefer wrap around filter magnets myself. Keeps all the nasties where they should be, in the filter. That way you don't get particles settling in the oil pan near the drain plug waiting to be knocked out into the crankcase by wildly sloshing oil. Plus if you wanted to you don't have to buy a special magnetic thingy, just place strong magnets on the oil filter and remove and replace when you change the filter.

I find the magnetic plug useful too. Having that magnetic plug told me I couldn't run 5W-20 in my 1999 S-10 4.3 engine a couple of years ago. The plug was loaded with tiny, silvery metal shavings. Switching back to 5w30 kept the plug 90% free of shavings.

Have used them for years along with a filter mag of some type whenever possible. Very useful and effective.

Have you ever noticed any differences in the amount of shavings on the magnetic plug between 5w30 and 0w-30? Theoretically I suppose there shouldn't be a difference, or perhaps fewer shavings with the 0w-30.

I guess another question is will higher shavings on the magnetic drain plug correlate with higher Iron readings in a used oil analysis (used oil analysis)?

Not a good correlation from what I've seen. Not that there is no correlation, just that it appears to me that it's not good. oilyriser has done used oil analysis and taken pictures of his magnet.
