This is a Magnefine inline Trans/Power Steering filter. It was installed on the return of a power steering system for 185k. Vehicle has seen several P/S fluid exchanges over it's life, but this is the first time for the filter being removed. I was expecting to see "more" in here. The black all over the towel is what wiped off of the internal magnet. The filter element does have some small metallic pieces all over, but nothing that would ever me any reason to worry.

Good example of the magnets doing a good chunk of the collection. The filter media held up well for those miles. What did you end up replacing the filter with?

Nice pics :). I agree, the magnet did most of the work. But, hey, 185k ? Looks great ! Personally, I use a different approach. No added filter. Good ole Turkey Baster with warm fluid, once a year. Engine running, but not to the point where the pump starts to " cry" from running fluid too low. Turn the steering wheel back and forth a few times, do it again. Good for another year. Haven't had a leaky rack yet.

Man, I promise I’m not picking on you, but Turkey baster, warm fluid, crying by not getting enough fluid, leaky racks…a comedian could find a treasure trove of standup material here!

In all seriousness, the turkey baster method is what I do to change out PS fluid too. I just empty the reservoir with the engine off. Then refill with fresh, drive around for a week, repeat until fluid is clear. Easy day 😎
