MAG1 gear oil

I think it is nothing special. But would work just fine. I would not run it as long as I might Amsoil, but would have no reservations in running it for 30K miles of regular service. Same goes for nearly any gear oil.

If your truck has an auto locker, your rear diff might chirp, or have issues with locking or unlocking, without a limited slip additive.

How cheap is cheap? Give a link. In the 10-15$ range there are a bunch to choose from.

Would not be my first budget minded choice.

Rockauto has it for 8.79 a qt

MAG1 Was (is?) Warrens flagship product. It's said the SuperTech oil was the same as MAG1. I know the PDS's were exactly the same.

If true, MAG1 75w-40 synthetic gear oil already has friction modifier in the formula. I base this on having SuperTech synthetic 75w140 in my trucks after I researched if I needed to add friction modifier for my limited slip F150. At the time, the PDS and on the bottle it said safe for limited slip and not to add friction modifier.

Notice i said "might" chirp.

GM trucks have auto lockers which will sometimes lock and not unlock if a limited slip additive is not used. Notice on bottle of Mobil 1, an "LS"

Also note on the Mag 1 description "suitable" for limited slip. Or "top off" for limited slip in the case of Supertech.

I haven't seen the top off for SuperTech. I, also, don't have any chirp, or other problems, with my limited slip F150. Both front and rear by the way.

Well just cause you have not seen it does not make it false.

You may never drive in such away that would activate a LSD or Auto Locker. I have used cheap gear oil, without a Limited Slip friction modifier and had issues.

Also, I am talking about auto lockers, which to my knowledge, your Ford does not have as a standard, like older GM trucks.

A recent look at the newer Supertech shows "full replacement" as opposed to "top off", so there I stand corrected.

Wonder why the verbiage would change from...."meets requirements" to "suitable" answer is legalese.....lawyer speak

of course, Amsoil is a great lube, but even they offer a product when the modifier in their product is not enough.

Interesting. Regarding gear oil, Are Friction modifiers only used or needed in LSD? I can not see why is it used or even desired in a conventional differential or gear box with out clutches.

Detroit and many of the aftermarket rear carrier manufactures say not to use it.

That seems to make perfect sense. In another thread topic there was discussion about the type of gear oil acceptable to use in a worm dirve for an Ariens snow blower auger with a brass worm gear. It was shared that the Ariens L3 propriety gear lube is a 75w-140 Full Syn. It is hard to find a alternative supplier that does not use Friction modifiers(a Unicorn, maybe) and is safe on yellow metals. I can not see why friction modifiers would be helpful and may even take away from performance in this application.
