Well, it was time for an OC, so I just dumped the PU and (with shaking hands--haha!) I refilled it with MS5K SN in 5W-20. I plan to run the MS5K for 5K and do a UOA and will extend to 7.5K if the 5K UOA is in order. I will be using a new lab (I have used Blackstone from the 1st OC), but I do not think Blackstone does a good job in the area of oxidation or particle counts.

In switching from a synthetic (I have only used PU for the last 69,305 miles) to a conventional, my only concern is with temperature/oxidation and I want to stay on top of it. I will post any noted differences in the way the engine runs (though I doubt any will be discernible) and will post the UOA of the MS5K at the next OC. Stay tuned...

You need to change your SIG. Good luck I would jump right into a 7K OCI, your results will be a little skewed I suspect on your initial UOA, from the oils using different add packs and chemistry, but it is nothing I would worry about.

Quite right; forgot about that (done now). Yes; I expect there will be a "flag" about sodium from the MS5K, but the 5.4 is totally healthy so I will warn the lab when I send in the sample. I am interested to see if the wear metals go up or down. Quite a few of the UOAs that I have seen for MS5K had the wear metals reduced from prior oils.

Mobil Super 5000

Diddo, I will be dumping Toyota 0W20 from Toyota Care out of my Corolla within the next 250 miles with Mobil Clean 5000, SM, actually. I got a couple cases of Mobil Clean 5000, SM AND Mobil Super 5000, from O'Reilly Oil Change specials for $4.99 (after MIR), and plan to use the Mobil Clean 5000 first. My Corolla has 15,000 on it and I plan on running these two oils out to 5,000 miles with a OEM Toyota Filter. I believe you too picked up your MS5K at O'Reillys/AutoZone. I have high hopes for this oil.

I did and managed to sell all of the Microgard and STP filters, so it worked out quite well. I also have some high expectations for this oil. We shall see soon enough

I used it all winter in my DD with good results. I'll use it again next winter or more often if I get a newer vehicle at some point.

A few reasons:
  • Cost - PU OC = $51 versus $17 for MS5K.
  • Experiment - to determine how well a conventional will perform versus a synthetic under the same operating conditions.
  • Stock - I have 175 quarts of MS5K that I acquired at about $1.60 a quart that I need to start using.

175 quarts? Yikes!!!! I thought I was bad with about 90 quarts in my stash. LOL

Yeah, better use what ya bought so the demand doesn't go up needlessly.

I wonder how much demand goes up from BITOG'ers cleaning house around the country? lol

Well if it looks good at 5k and you extend to 7.5k you only have 215,000 miles worth of oil so I see your point.

I have 6 gallons of M1 5W20 SM I acquired at roughly $1.50 quart I need to do something with.

Unfortunately, I would not have that many miles of oil--even if it were all for the FX4. 175\7 = 25*7500 = 187,500 miles (provided I can go to 7,500).

But there was a method to my madness; it is 175 quarts for 3 vehicles (7QTs, 5QTs, and 5QTs per OC) so 10 OCs per vehicle with some for top offs or 75,000 miles for the FX4 and 50,000 miles each for the Hyundais.

LOL - I have never "hoarded" before, but at $1.60 per quart, it seemed like a good deal and my OCs in the FX4 will cost 3x less than they did using PU (and I did not have 3x the interval with PU either--doubt it would even if I wanted to stretch it; could not manage 22,500 even on PU).

Keep us posted when you do your next UOA. I am looking forward on the results especially since you have kept a very detailed record on your FX4.

Will do; there will be 2 UOAs for the last one of PU (one with Blackstone and one with another lab) so that I can set a "standard" for the new lab. The new lab will process all of the ones with MS5K as they have better tests for oxidation and this is the only concern that I have with a conventional oil.

If you live in a rual /farm area do alot of hway driving you can extend oci to 10k. However if not you made a pretty good move cost wise.

My oil change actually turned out to be (2+) quarts of PU left over from a previous oil change and (2) quarts of Mobil Clean 5000. After a shake, the Mobil Clean 5000 looked a little frothy, but I contribute that to the shake. I can only imagine how the oil is beat on in the engine. I hope it isn't prone to foaming.
