Well, After some research, pricing etc... I've decided to try PP 5w30.

My truck is 8 years old. I go to college so I need to save a few bucks but I can't justify on paying $5 1/2 bucks a quart for oil anymore.

I do alot of highway commuting, about 400 miles on a weekend total and then maybe 10 miles or so, if that while at college on a week or 2 period. So I figure now, a group3 or 4 oil drugged with some LC and 8-10K mile OCI's I'll get 200K from my little Ranger no sweat. I'm coming up on 80K miles within 2-300 miles or so. Hopefully my truck likes it, we'll see,,,,op

PP just about fifty cents cheaper here, almost five dollars per qt. Don’t see dramatic saving unless you pay half from any other brand. I don’t think couple of dollars in a year can make a huge difference in your budget. It sound like cheaper deal but actual cost same as any other without few cents..

How much are you paying for that Platinum oilpan49? Sounds like you caught a rebate sale on it from Advance Auto or Pep Boys?

With Advance Auto, MAKE SURE you make copies of everything before sending it in. I think that outfit is borderline-honest myself. Lots of complaints here at BITOG from folks not getting their rebate checks from AA.

If you needed to save a few bucks why didn't you go with a dino purchased on sale?
Under your driving condition it could easily last for 6-8K miles between the changes.
Freeway driving is the easiest on oil.

I've never bought PP before, after my truck hits 80K, this will be my first time running PP.

Now since you guys replied, I'm having second thoughts??????? Now since Castrol is the new BITOG sponsor, I'm considering there products. I'll let everyone know what I decide with,,,,op

P.S First things first, I need to get a UOA on my truck. I've only done 1 UOA on it I'm pretty sure in the 3 years I've owned it

I've got it in my Tahoe, and my Suburban is well into its second oil change. The engines seem to be slightly quieter at cold start. I had been using M1 until Katrina killed the certification. I don't know if I'll go back.

I'm VERY happy so far with the Pennz Plat. In my 4.6L Ford Explorer the engine is definitely quieter than with the Mobil 1 I was running. I'm also keeping in ming the placebo effect....

I hope we've found a winner. And, I hope Pennz. keeps up the $1.99 a quart specials

I just drained out PP 5w-30 from my truck and was very pleased with it - ran quieter and strong.

Definitely recommend it.

Mobil 1 is definitley getting way too pricey. When my stock is used up in a year or so (Pep Boy coupons) I hope to get some $1.99 PP.

Pennzoil Platinum.

Its the Havoline of the Synthetic line on BITOG right now, not due to UOAs and VOAs, but due to cheap pricing.

I'm guilty too. I have some M1 left but bought 18 qts of PP for ~$0.32/qt after rebates.

Unexpectedly I got Castrol GTX 5w30 at Carquest. I got it because there, we can get student discounts, so I bought 5 quarts for $2.49, I'm not complaining.

Now get this, while not impressed with there oil selection, I saw Castrol Syntec and thought I would give that a go. Guess what, Carquest wanted $10.50/qt!!!!! you believe that crap?!?!?! With student discount, they knock it off down too $6.30/qt!!! Good Lord!!!

Anyway though, Brian Hughes UOA with his 11K mile Pennzoil + LC run encouraged me to try dino for a change in the Ranger, despite most of it's life under my ownership has been using Mobil1. We'll see how it goes,,,,,,,op

I ran a similar type driving schedule in college and did dino changes at 4-5K miles. That vehicle now has 194K miles on it and still running strong. Those highway miles are the best thing for your oil and vehicle, I personally think unless you are running out to 10k or longer oci that the synthetic is overkill, but at the rebate prices for PP and Synthetic Q it really works out the same as most dinos. If you are keeen on syn then check the rebate promotions board here and buy when the offers are bring prices down to dino levels.
