I am changing to M1 at 10 K in a V6 4WD Taco. That is what the dealer has.
The PU mostly sits in the WI winter. I am on a farm and need go nowhere. South perhaps if the airlines don`t go broke. The freezer still has deer meat and fish from the farm. I ran the PU a few times at 25 degrees and once at 0 to push a friend out of a ditch. I avoid cold starts. Summer can get hot.
I was thinking 5w30. That is the OEM dino in it and it did fine.
Would 0w30 be a better choice?
I plan to change all of the boxes to synthetic.
I put on 500 Mls. last year. So the oil will time out rather than milage out. Also, I`ll get the best oil filter, which would be?
As you have gathered, I don`t know much.

Thank You

We all have different opinions here, but personally I'd go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 for how your describing your use regimen. It's just about exactly as my F150 Crew V8. I use the before mentioned oil and change it out about every year and a half. I use Motorcraft filters on it as they have gotten pretty good reviews. On my other cars, I strictly use Purolator Plus. I have followed this regimen for a long time now and never look back. I take the Accords out to about 14K before changing the oil. Your culprit will be sitting and I'd like to have a robust oil in their.

I'd recommend that you stay with dino and save the $$. Your truck will die from little use more than anything else.

Tons of Toyotas out there with any oil in the crankcase making hundreds of thousands of miles.

Since we don't know where you live and when you operate the truck how far you go, I'd say once a year with any oil is about you can do.

A used oil analysis would show how much water and by products are in the crankcase.

Supertech from Wal-Mart is a good filter for your use.

500 miles a year is almost a sell the truck number IMO.

I did a 4k OCI over 8-9 months and the used oil analysis came back not good. That was with syn. For short trips, I will not go max of 5-6months OCI.

Welcome! Bill

I agree the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 would do fine but the temps you see
i'm leaning towards the 0w30,,tad bit better start up protection
i run it and my winter cars and always had a good feel about
it,no noise instant oil pressure and no usage at all,i'd go
with the 0w30 and a Mobil 1 filter..

Thanks guys,
I need the truck when I need the truck.
Not runnining it often will cause the most problem.
But, if I understand, synthetic will obviate the non use some.
And also help MPG.
The farm is near La Crosse, WI.
I have seen it -30 and +100. This is rare and you are not going anywhere. Well, I`m not.

I just noticed you said WI... Sorry!

Syn will not obviate non use. My Corolla had not been run for 2 weeks and made some major noise when I started it(and it has syn in it right now.)

Syn or conventional is not going to fix non use.

Do not worry about MPG with 500 miles a year use. (Syn does not help with MPG over todays 5w30 oils. The SL/SM has really helped conventional oils)

But MPG will be close with any same *weight* oil.

Is it possible when you use it to drive it at least 20 miles one way and then back?

That would help more than ANYTHING.

Take care, Bill

"Town is 8 mls. The gauge reads middle by then. It is not in degrees.
I could explore and put 20 on it.

If the truck sits a lot, I think you would be served best by HDEO, which had additives to help prevent corrosion and deal with moisture. A poster on here a while ago had a truck that saw very short trips/lots of sitting, and he got much better results on Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 than Syntec Blend 10w30. A 0W-30, 0W-40, or 5W-40 would cover all temp. extremes you might see....

Explore is a good thing!

The temp gauge may be in half, but your oil is not up to any temp.

It takes some time to get the oil up to temp THEN start to burn off the byproducts and water in the crankcase.

I'd go with an oil change every six months and use 0w30 with a purolator (purone) oil filter.

If you prefer to use conventional oil then a 5w30 would be fine.

By the way, how long does your battery last with this type of use?

It is an `06 and I have had no trouble. It is a big battery.
I hear Optima makes a deep cycle that will last the winter.
I take the one in the `62 GMC Housecar out. When it goes bad, I`ll buy the yellow top Optima and be done with it.
I was going to put a TRD super charger on the Taco. But the fuel situation is iffy. It needs 91 gas, What I can buy is 87+10%booze,89 with 6% and, for now, 93 Oct.gas.
My concern is that it will go the way of the 91 oct. gas which is called for. I can use the torque to push things on the farm.
This is what Toyota said:
COL. Ness,

Thank you for your interest in TRD. It is our recommendation, that 93 octane fuel be used with the TRD supercharger kit. If you were to use a lower octane fuel, it is our belief that you may not gain the horsepower and torque as advertised.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

TRD_Help
I don`t use enough fuel to make price an issue.

Thank You gentlemen,
I am forwarding the disparate comments to my Taco Svc. Mgr.
I very much appreaciate your input.

Oh, I am going to change the boxes to Syn. also.
I assume an equal weight to OEM would do?
