this vehicle has been my worry bead on lubrication. my beloved M1 0w40 just can't seem to tame it, so i went to TDT with much better results. refill was Delvac1, will try taking it out to 15k.

While I see the merits of D1 over the magic 0w-40, I don't see much issue with M1 0w-20 if it would remain consistent for another 5k. What caused you to use 0w-20 for 5k and what prevented you from going to 10k with it? I may have missed something due to the wiggle factor.

gary, you didn't miss anything. i missed changing it from 0w20 to 0w40 when i imported the data onto an old miata post. all of the previous runs were 0w40. sorry about that.

Okay. Now it makes a bit more sense. I should have been able to integrate it from the viscosity numbers.

It does appear that M1 0w-40 is decayed in visc as much as it's going to in this engine by 5k. It also shows that, in terms of extended drains it's a YMMV fair weather champion in non-OEM spec'd engines. Not that the results were bad, per se~, just not the best that could be achieved.

there are two interesting points here. the VK45 is spec'd as a 30wt engine, even the 0w40 is out of Mfg'rs spec for this application. second, there have been several tales of lower end failures on this engine, enough that the bottom end metals were causing me to sweat a bit. going to the TDT was an experiment to try to get the lead and tin under control. however, i liked it so much (drivability) i decided to go whole hog and bring out the big gun of Delvac1.

the FX45 got BETTER mileage with the TDT, which was the opposite of what i expected. of course, most of my trips are long ones (short trips around town i use the miata for).

i look forward to the Delvac1 UOA. it would seem that this engine prefers thicker oils, despite Nissan's manuals.

Looks pretty inconclusive to me. Conditions vary from run to run with the same oil. I would change it every 5k and forget the analysis. Remember the engine is the main determinate of the results; Not the particular oil in use.

This is true for many engines.

With these oils that would be even more of a waste of money than doing analysis. You would just have a thinner wallet without the details.

You don't happen to live on 555(5) 5th street, do you FZ1? Just trying to get some OCD "5" component factored here. Car wouldn't happen to be a 5 series BMW ..or some vehicle with a 5.0 engine?? 5 quarts would be likely ..it may have started there.

Lol. Is it my fault I noticed how much less metal was in the oil at 5K? Am I the only person that prefers an oil and filter change to an analysis? I don't think so. I'm saving lives here.....O.K.,.....O.K.,...... it is just engine lives. 555555.

^ lol

The TDT at 10k looks about as good as the 0w40 at 5k IMO. I bet the D1 brings home the bacon if you're looking to stick with a 10k oci. If not, do what FZ1 recommends and shorten the oci.

I haven't used D1 for since pre-Katrina, but I have to grant D1 all of its glory in that I truly think that it is about the absolute best oil in its class that is available in such wide distribution. I suspect that XOM has kept this oil out on the leading edge. It's a shame it can't fit into the Euro alphabet soup for contemporary standards. It's better than what they currently offer as OEM approved, imo. I've rarely seen it get a beat down pulled on it in any service. It's as bullet proof as one can get OTC.
