Well aware of the "Use only Hyundai / Kia Oil Filters" TSB issued but wanted to report in my 2010 Hyundai Elantra I heard no ping , rattle , knocking or any other noises on start up and while running the M1 extended oil filter (M-104). I 'll continue to moitor but so far A + . I obtained the M1 oil filter in an AA combo sale with M1 oil other wise I would be using the OEM filter from Hyundai .

I agree, The M1's and K&N (very similar if not exact internals) have been working great on my Sonata. I was nervous about trying non OEM after I tried a WIX and the rattle was terrible. No bash on WIX BTW.

This interesting. I don't follow Hyundai stuff but I have a friend with one and uses M1 EP. Sounds terrible! May be unrelated but will look into it...

When I bought my Sonata, it had a Fram orange can on it, which I ran for several thousand miles. It got a horrible knock shortly after installing one of the Autozone STP filters made by Champion Labs. I can't remember if it was e-core or not. I installed a genuine Hyundai filter and it went away.

Long story short, not every filter will cause it. The TSB doesn't mention any models/engines specifically, but I would suspect some engines are more susceptible than others.

Also, using an aftermarket filter won't void the warranty, unless the engine fails and they can prove it was caused by the filter. I've never read of any real damage caused by an aftermarket filter on a Hyundai. Just take it off if it makes noise.

BTW- Here's the TSB, for anyone who's interested in seeing it.

I used M1 oil filters with no problems at all for 50 000km now.
My current oil filter is a Royal Purple filter , using it for its second OCI.
Previous run was for 9000km and I plan on doing another 15 000km with
the same oil filter.... Total time on this RP filter will be 24000kms- 15000 miles.

As much as I'm sure these extended OCI's might be OK , I can't bring myself to doing much more than 10-12K km even using Amsoil and the EA filter .

As I said , I picked up the M1 oil filter and M1 5W 20 syntheic oil during an Advance Auto sale for $32.00 . I can pick up M1 or PP synthetic oil at WM for $26.00 and the OEM Hyundai oil filter for around $6.00 at the dealer which totals out to be about the same price. In the future I am more inclined to look for roll back price sales of either PP or M1 at WM and buy the OEM Hyundai filter to go with it . But for now , no issues running the M1 oil & filter in my Elantra .

On our 2009 Sonata I've used these aftermarket oil filters:
K&N, Purolator Classic, and Pure One.

No startup noises with any of them. I use them for two OCIs since Hyundai has no OLM and pushes frequent oil changes.

I've never had a problem with any aftermarket filter I've used. I regularly switch from Napa Gold to PureOne depending on which I get cheaper. However, it wasn't until BITOG that I started paying close attention.

A couple of months ago put on a Bosch D+ and filled Pennzoil Platinum for the first time. Expecting the PP to make my engine silent for some reason, I was alarmed when I could hear a ticking. Thinking that the D+ was too restrictive, and remembering what I read about the TSB on this site, I ran to the dealer and got a couple of OEM filters. I replaced the D+ with an OEM (which are very nice, BTW) and still had the same noise. I think I was just hearing the injectors. Don't over-think the situation and contact BITOG-itis.

I have seen the same TSB, only there was a photo of a e-core cut-away as the example. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2595610

I think that any well-constructed oil filter will treat you well. I would run an M1 filter in a heartbeat. If I see a deal like the one the OP had, I will stock up.

That's when I would say : " Take off the valve cover boys and behold " ...you could perform surgery from the inside of my engine. Furthermore , Korean cars are not "ricers" ...I would prefer to work in "Kimchi" into the description as being more fitting - the Koreans now make cars the Japanese envy and for a better price.
