hi guys, quick question.. except the 5w or 10w, is there a difference between the synthetic of mobil 1 5w30 and 10w30? I'm asking because I just switch for 10w30 M1 (due to out of stock of 5w30 in the area) and its the first time the car burns or take .5 liter of make-up oil for 800 kms approx. Usually its .5 liters for 5000 kms. Its the first time I run M1 10w30 in it. It always get the M1 5w30 usually. I think I'll switch very very soon to pennzoil 5w30...

Your oil consumption problem is not related to the 10-30. Something else going with your engine. My sons Ford Ranger has 330,000 miles on it, all with M1 10-30 10,000 mile OCI.

M1 5W-30 has a 40C cSt of 64.?, 100C cSt of 11.3, HTHS of 3.09. M1 10W-30 has a 40C cSt of 62, 100C cSt of 10, HTHS of 3.14. It appears the 10W is basically the same as the 5W, but with less VII.

When I used to use Mobil 1, I had some consumption with 5W-30 but none with 10W-30. All I could imagine was the higher HTHS and less volatility of 10W-30, but I thought not really enough to matter. Interesting that you've noticed the opposite, but way more than I encountered. Maybe there's another factor like the PCV system to look at.

here's the update.. I just bought in special 2 4qts of pennzoil platinum synthetic oil with the spec that the engine needs and I'll switch this weekend with this oil before doing my long trip (1.5k miles) monday morning to friday night. Whats strange is that i had a 2002 buick regal with the 3800 series II and always had valvoline or Pennzoil regular 10w30 and used about 500ml per 5k miles (not bad at all) and I just talked with my dad (who bought my car) and he did switch from pennzoil dino to mobil 1 10w30 and after 2k miles, it was down almost 1 qt. He switched to PP and now uses about .5 qt in 5k miles just like the old days... I'm gonna make the switch to PP and give you news about it.

I changed in December from Mobil 1 10W30 to PP 5W30 and am extremely happy with the PP. I think you'll be happy too. You might use a little oil at first, stick with it. It didn't happen to me but some people reported slight oil consumption when they first used PP, but it did return to normal for them in a short period of time. HTH

here's an update. I flush the mobil 1 10w30 last saturday for the PP 5w30. This morning I left home for a business trip. Now, 721kms later, the oil level on the dipstick it at the full mark. Usually, with the Mobil 10w30, after 800kms, I had to put half a quart til full line. I guess I took a bad batch of Mobil at Wal-Mart. I dont care, the care seems to run smoother with PP and seems to be more responsive. After my trip, I'll check the oil level (I'll have made another 1200kms on the oil) this saturday. -Mark.

I'm at the middle of my business trip and I've done another 1400 miles + the 500 miles of the beginning. I just checked the oil level and the level is at the full line. I'm very satisfied of PP. :D :D How come my car drank half quart per 400-500 miles with 10w30 from Mobil 1 and after 2000 miles with PP, nothing?

Well, one possibility is that M1 is slicker and slides through the rings and tends to get burned off easier. I've noticed some oil loss with M1 but I'd place it at a quart every 2 or 3 thousand miles. Now my LS1 tends to drink more M1 than our other vehicles.
