I'm now about 400 miles into ARX rinse phase on my Toyota PU (2.7L 4 cyl. 109,000 miles)and in mornings when its cold there's a light knocking sound if under load for first 2-3 minutes before warming up. Sound wasn't there prior to ARX clean. Oil being used is Chevron Supreme 5W30 w/NAPA Gold filter (same combination for past 30K). Couple of years back had same knock but much louder was noticed w/Mobil 1 but ceased when changed to Havoline and now Chevron. Ideas? Piston slap? Bad Filter?

I would wait until the Rinse Phase is over, just keep driving, my car made weird sounds during the rinse phase. I would see what happens after the Rinse Phase is over.

What does the rinse oil look like on the dip stick after only 400 miles? If already blackened, then I would consider a filter swap out at the 1000 mile mark, during the rinse phase.

I think it has something to do with loosening up deposits. I would just wait it out and the noise should disappear.

BTW, I've had the same thing on the Corolla. I'm almost done with the 2nd rinse and hope the noises go away.

Happened to me on my 3.0 Mitsubishi. Not uncommon at all. I speculate that some films are thicker than others ..and some drainage passages (or rather some downstream pressure passages) will clean up before others at some branched point. For example, one HLA may clean up sooner than others and allow the branch to bleed down faster if the supply hasn't fully cleaned up yet.

It will pass with time.

I'm 900 miles into my Auto-RX rinse and when I first put the Pennzoil Platinum in it was so clean that I couldn't see it on the dipstick, then in the first 250 miles it turned a golden brown, then went back to this clear colour from 250-900 miles and it seems to be staying clear...

Car is running very smooth and quiet and seems a bit peppier, but this could be me

My engine did the same thing. I am almost done with the rinse phase now. I have about 500 miles to go! I can't wait to change my oil again. But the bad sounds were worse at the beginning of the rinse phase. So it got better on my engine, but also the temps around me have gotten warmer so im not sure which has had the bigger influence. But the point is mine did make noises on the rinse phase that it did not make before.

I'm about 300 miles into the second rinse phase now. I didn't experience anything out of the ordinary. During the first clean/rinse I changed the oil filter at the halfway point both times, thinking I would find it filled with junk. Nothing out of the ordinary both times. During the second clean phase I left the filter on the whole time, changed the oil and filter at about 2700 miles, again nothing out of the ordinary. 300 miles into the final rinse and the oil is as clean as the day I put it in.

What did happen? I changed from a 5W30 to a 5W20 oil and consumption is now half of what it was. I had a slight oil leak which stopped about halfway through the first rinse phase. The 5W20 should be leaking more than the 5W30. The vehicle is a 93 Aerostar with about 168,000 miles on the clock.

I'd say my engine was pretty clean, but it became obvious that it needed some more cleaning to cut down the oil use, and stop a leak. It also seems to have a little more get up and go now.
