LS2's Burning Oil

The LS2's are really having a oil burning issue. Many of the GTO owners are seeing a quart per 1000 miles.....so GM decides the answer is to send this letter out. Talk about CYA....."my engine burnt up"..."we sent you a letter telling you to check your oil every five minutes." LOL...What I don't get is this manual trannie toned letter....the automatics are having the exact same issue.....guess GM is still drafting that letter

Another GM oil burner? LOL I've often wondered if manual transmissions result in more oil consumption than automatics? I've also wondered if people are not breaking-in the cars properly. Properly meaning HARD from the beginning. Thoughts?

How much oil are they burning, as a rule? Are we talking a quart or so every 3k miles, or half a quart every fill up?

This should help just a little with my GTO envy...just a little...

Really varies. Some a quart every 1000 miles...some less.
PCV design seems to be contributing significantly.....again....

I bought my new GTO in March of 05 and to date have had no oil consumption problem. Oh, I regularly use the "dreaded" Mobil 1 5W30.

Aint nothing wrong with Mobil 1 for sure. Are you a M6 or A4?

This same type of TSB came out years ago for Corvette owners with the LS1 for the very same reasons.

I drove my 2006 Saab 93 on the Autobahn, at Autobahn speeds, with about 500 miles on it. Pretty much it's entire break-in was highway driving.

Oil consumption? Oil was last changed at 3600 miles with the recommended Mobil 1 0W-40. Now it has 8800 miles. In those 5200 miles the oil level has not dropped one bit.

This, by the way, is a 2.0 turbocharged engine.

I drive my LS2 from SF to LA at 140 MPH or above 75% of the way. Often seeing 4-5k RPM + the whole way as I have 3.91's in her. I beat it like a red-headed step child. I have used over a dozen different brands and grades of synthetic oils. My oil level has never decreased even one millimeter. I did receive that letter last week, but I check the oil all the time anyways. I have not burned using 0w-20, or 10w-40. Nothing whatsoever. Engine runs like a dream.

True story Sprintman, but the simpler it is, the more convoluted some can make it. If oil burning is an issue, Redline 5w-40, Mobil 1 0w-40, or Amsoil 5w-40 should take care of that.

I run Redline 5w-20 in mine. It is thin yet there is no detectable valve train noises associated with the other thin oils I have run.

I have friends getting excellent results from Pennzoil 5w30 and 5w-40 synthetics.

I don't really care, the quicker I blow it up, the quicker I can consult with Sarge here and dump in a stroker.

LOL. Yeah my stock LS1 lasted about two months

The reason I posted this letter isn't to solicit any opinions about what to do about it. I.E. Thicker oils etc. It is amazing to me GM would even send the dad gum thing out!

I think ( hope) he was exaggerating to make his point. I have made that exact drive back in the 70's and didn't see many places to open it up to those speeds for sure. I think he was kidding.....Now I10 in Arizona and New Mexico is another story

Be on the lookout for GM to issue a TSB on this...which will be comprised of a new dipstick that requires an extra quart of oil in the pan to read 'full'. This is how they 'took care of' the oil burning situation in the 2.5 Fiero.

3000 RPM = aggressive driving??? Did they design this thing for Aunt Edna to drive?

And they want you to check the oil at EVERY fuel-up. I consider myself fairly anal about checking oil, but what is that, every few hundred miles? Doesn't make me want to rush right out and buy another GM.

I'll have to ask my step-father if he received one of these letters for his GTO and if he's noticed any oil consumption.
