I just saw Maxlife ATF gallons listed on the Lowes site. My local store doesn't carry it so I have no idea if this is the in-store price, but it appears to be available for shipping.

AFAIK this qualifies for the $7 Valvoline rebate.

Can someone provide a definative answer if this (or any) Dex/Merc ATF has equivalent properties to something/anything claiming to be ATF+4 ?

No dex/merc or any multi will work in place of ATF+4 over the long run. Don't mess around with alternatives.

I will say ATF+4 works better than dex in a T56.

Valvoline does not list ATF+4 on the list of compatible applications here.
On that Valvoline web page there was a live-chat link. I started a live chat. I asked this question:

Is Maxlife multi-vehicle ATF equivalent to or has the same specifications as ATF+4 ?

After initially asking the question to the front-line agent, I was transfered to the "Valvoline Global Command Center Chat" where I was greeted by a different agent and apparently had to ask the question again. I waited for 10 minutes and finally got this answer:

"No, Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle ATF does not cover ATF+4."

Has LSJ ever done ATF videos, or expressed any interest in AT fluids?

I have a t56 in my gto. The recommendation is actually a dex iii. I've experimented with generic dex iii like supertech and it was notchy to get into gear when cold. The same applied to a synthetic dex vi when a shop put that in when I had my clutch changed. I had them remove it and replace it with the called for fluid which is now gm manual transmission and transfer case fluid. It used to be gm dex iii but that doesn't exist any more. Tremec has also stated that mobil 1synthetic multi vehicle ATF is also compatible. And I've heard that synchomesh works but never tried it.

How did you hear about +4 being good? Is that non synthetic? Do you have a t56?

I tried Dex VI, Maxlife, Pennzoil Synchromesh.

The reason I decided to try ATF+4 is because it's synthetic, thicker, and more friction modifiers than Dexron III.

Synchromesh I found out isn't recommended for T56 because of the paper blocker rings. Stock T56 requires ATF. Mine's a rebuilt unit from RPM that has kevlar blocker rings. 3rd was out when I bought the car.

The synchromesh worked well, but the ATF+4 is the best I've used. Stuck with it for 60k miles and counting. Shift feel is great.

Mine is slated for delivery on Saturday too. I figured I would take a shot and see if I get 3 gallons. If it is only 1 gallon, I can return it or ask for a price match on the other product ID.

Castrol High Mileage ATF (Green bottle) is also a high viscosity fluid with higher than average additive package. I think it may only be "semi-syn" but holds up better than Dex3 with better additive package. I use it in older transmissions that call for Dex3/T-IV/Etc...

Maybe a good fall back to try if ever needed.

Thats what I used in my rebuilt camaro T56 based on their recommendation, shifted like butter...
