i recently installed a header, removed my cat that was around 75% plugged and also put a spintech pro-street muffler on my 86 Toy truck. It's pretty loud to the point that it gets annoying driving it. If i install another cat, will the sound decrease quite a bit?

1. Does the exhaust exit out the back or under the vehicle?
It can sound better and quieter if the sound does not reflect
from under the vehicle. Make sure pipe exits outside the
vehicle not under it.

2. I agree with resonator. That usually takes annoying tones
and vibrations out of the system.

3. Your engine may just not produce the nice sounds another
engine may produce. Is that a 4 or 6 cylinder?

You do not need a cat, maybe a dog, but seriously the Walker Super Turbo is a good flowing muffler that will tame the noise down.

Another good muffler is the Walker Ultra Flow SS, it is a stainless steel muffler that flows better than the Super Turbo and is not that much louder.

I would follow what ZZman has said.

I would also think that you have a single exhaust. If your cat clooged before it will clog again.

The cat was there before i got the truck.who know how long it's been there

insted of paying alot of cash for a Cat, I'd just run glasspack mufflers from the headers back. one after another. that will be very quiet and it will not restrict flow at all.

Watch some of the "performance" mufflers are restrictive in that the tubing inside is smaller than the piping in your system. I'm pretty sure the Thrush turbo was that way when I was shopping exhaust last year. Also, Cherry Bomb glass packs were that way. I ended up with a Flowtech Raptor and love it. Great sound for my F150 4.9L, but I do have a cat. Mine exits out the side in front of rear tire. Not too loud but has authority, which may be partly from the big block inline six. Flowtech has some other nice mufflers.

i paid 40.00 for a name-brand, brand new cat on ebay. it's for an 86, so not the obdII type. Also, alot,if not all glasspacks have quite a bit of backpressure.

Cats are great mufflers.
Get one on there for a bunch of good reasons.
Also, a quality resonator will help a lot. A cruddy resonator will be a cork, so get a Magnaflow.

Glasspacks have no back pressure what so ever. They are strait pipes with holes drilled in them, and then rapped with fiber glass. There is no restricions.

A cat has WAY more restricition.

That they do. I had glasspacks on my car when I first got it. They droned more than my current mufflers, weren't as loud, and sounded like [censored]. I'll have to disagree that hooker or spintech > magnaflow or Flowmaster

Might want to check some flow numbers on glass packs. The ones that have no louvers in them flow better, but they still don't flow like straight pipe or good mufflers.
