And as for the new Mazda products, you may be shocked to learn that they are actually Fords, inside and out. And, you guessed it, just like most domestic vehicles, they break in unpredictable ways, often at low mileages.

LOL...really? My Fords have gone well over 100K miles with less than half of the maintenance he's recommending, and none of that burning a quart in 1500 miles nonsense.

You were also pretty lucky to get 250K out of the 6.5, especially if it was a turbo diesel, I've seen ones from that era that broke the crankshaft by 80K! That S.F. garage is stuck in the Dark Ages, even my old Ford van's E4OD could get 20K between ATF flushes.

I liked the 6.5TD mechanicals, the Stanadyne DB4 pump, not so much.

The engine did not go 250k mi, the original engine developed a bad knock at 150k km (warranty was for 160k km/ 100k mi). Took it to the GM dealer where the van was purchased and the service writer and a mechanic pretended not hear the knock. Took it to a better GM dealer who dealt with a lot of GM trucks and they rebuilt the engine. At 157k km the engine seized up and GM installed a new crate engine under warranty. That engine performed flawlessly till, at about 420k km, a metal oil cooler line fretted thru at a clamp which wasn't tightened down properly (from the time the replacement engine was installed). All the oil was lost on the highway and the driver continued driving since he felt the oil pressure gauge was showing some pressure, not zero. We scrapped the van at that point.

My '97 Crown Vic...which has a bit over 275K on it and who knows how many idle hours (it was both a police car and a cab) uses a quart every 1500 miles.

(I found that website by searching google for "quart 1500 miles").

I think it's OK for a V8 with that many miles and that kinda usage to use that much oil.

Probably, though, Art wasn't thinking about old police cars when he said that much usage is common...

...other than perhaps the thought that what he's smoking might increase his chances of ending up in the back of one.

Whatta bunch of hooey... a dinosaur or a con man, or a bit of both.

I agree with the comment that you have to consider his target audience. Are people really that gullible? Yes they are. I know several who follow their fav auto 'guru' like trained dogs.

And BTW, no diesels here but tons of 4L80e's in 9200 pound extended Savanas with 6.0 gas motors. Our transmissions routinely go 150k MILES or more. I have one van with 408000 miles (not a misprint!) that works daily. Uses no oil, doesn't smoke or rattle, and all original drivetrain except u-joints!

I will flatly state that no biz has a tougher duty cycle than us.

So you are saying his target audience is people that would rather trash their vehicle than perform proper maintenance? I thought those people mostly went to Jiffy Lube.

I knew a mechanic who said synthetic blend is superior to full synthetic. It didn't matter what you said to debate it, he stuck to his opinion.
