Lately I lost my horn and cruise control, and the airbag light(red) on the dashboard came on, seemingly all at about the same time, although didn't notice exactly the timing of it all. Vehicle is a '98 Plymouth minivan. Any suggestions as to what is the problem? Thanks for any and all ideas.

Call a dealer with Vin# I am positive there was a recall on those minivans for that very issue.

SIR Coil, sometimes called a "Clock spring" It is the wire that allows the controls on the steering wheel, and the Air bag to be connected to the rest of the car. There was a TSB for this a few years ago. There may even have been a campaign. I recall hearing about a lot of these in and around 2001 when I worked a Chrysler dealer.

Yes there was a recall on this.. A very common problem.... There was another post about this problem and I posted the recall number....

Darn near GUARANTEED clockspring issue. Easy fix, all it takes is a steering wheel puller and patience.

In a Ford it would be the clock spring, I have a feeling it is the same for Chrysler too.

Yea, until he goes to the dealer and is told that the part is on a four week (or more) backorder.

The clockspring keep a solid electrical connection to the steering wheel. It is what is says, like a big clockspring.
Old common systems used a brass ring and spring loaded carbon contact. This is not good enough for the new air bag systems .

Fuses fist, then call the dealer. If they balk, remind them that this is a safety device that is in issue.

You can buy a used clockspring from a junkyard search engine like car-part.com.

I used to buy them all the time for customers.

But that might leave you with the same problem down the road with a defective OEM part.

Yup, my wifes 01 T&C had to get a new clockspring last summer. Darn thing cost me around $150 since our van was made 1 or 2 months after all the ones recalled.

In the last few weeks I've had the same issue with my '97 voyager. Airbag light was on and off, and now is on all the time and the horn doesn't work either. My vehicle is covered under the recall and I called the local dodge dealer this week to schedule a time to bring it in. They told me "the part is on back order and ... derrr ..." I said "can you get the part and let me know when it comes in???" They said "uhh sure" and transfered me to parts who put me on hold until I got tired of waiting and hung up. I will call back this week and try to get this part ordered or see what they can tell me. I don't think dealers are too interested in resolving issues on '97 vehicles from a bankrupt company. I will update the thread if i learn anything else.
