He is shopping Civic/Corolla/Sentra sized, Altima would would be Camry/Accord sized.

You really can't go wrong with any brand today. They all have reached a certain level of reliability.

Honda is my first choice and Toyota second. I would consider other brands if those two didn't have something compelling. Example, the Rouge had so much more to offer over the CR-V and RAV4. This was a company vehicle but even if I was making the decision for myself I would have done the same.

Parking and garage space. Parking a Camcord size car is a hassle in some areas. Also, fitting one into a contractor-size "2-car" garage is nigh well impossible.

And, a 2014 Civic will return 40+ mpg highway and low-mid 30's combined, while a Camry or Accord will be lucky to return high 30's highway and mid-high 20's combined. If the extra space/bulk isn't wanted or needed, why bother?

If cargo capacity is important, a Fit might be the way to go. The cargo area is cavernous for a car that size.

Our 2012 Civic does 41mpg on the highway, Central Florida (flat terrain), 70mph, cruise control, a/c on. Wife was averaging 35mpg with her mixed driving.

My former 2004 Accord 4 cylinder manual would get 33mpg at 70mph and 31mpg at 80mph. All city it would get 25mpg no matter how hard I drove it.

Our 2013 Prius gets 50mpg under most conditions. 49.5mpg since new, now at 11k.

Which ever car(s) you are considering check fuelly.com to get idea of real mpgs, many miss the mark.
