Some of you may remember me squawking about my microwave ISP and their constantly slow service - they can't even reliably give us 1meg even though we're paying for it. Supposedly the tech came out and confirmed that the re-sends were pretty high, but due to foliage (possibly) that there really isn't much to be done. I'm not too sure I believe the foliage explanation, as we've only had it for a little over a year and it is in the middle of the winter here. Also, foliage wont suddenly effect service late in the evening.

Anyway, yesterday I received a mailer from a local installer for Exede, talking about speads of up to 12mb. Sounded good, so I set out to find and read some reviews. What I found was a pretty solid mix ranging from "It's horrible, don't ever use it" to "Best thing since sliced bread"... Lots of common ground can be found with poor installation or installer communication with the parent company. One thing that does concern me is there are some reports of discrepancies in data tracking/usage. There is a bandwidth cap imposed and after you exceed it, they throttle your connection. Well some users were reporting 5-15 gig in one day! How is this possible? WiFi I know, but is there any other outside factors that could cause this? How about usage tracking errors on their end?

I know another cause for poor satellite performance is poor alignment. Can this be adjusted manually by me, if for any reason it is off?

Now I know that satellite has some inherent short comings, like weather fade and high ping times, but interestingly, many reviews remarked that weather fade has been less noticeable than with other satellite providers. From what I've read, it's a new satellite and is superior to the old ones?

Do you folks think that this is going to be a better value? Even if I don't get the 12meg, instead only receiving 3 or 4, it's better than .3 to 1mb. My current plan has no bandwidth cap, but instead has poor speed - effectively limiting bandwidth. Even so, I don't imagine my wife and I are going to exceed a 10gig/mo limit for the basic plan as we usually crawl our respective forums and surf youtube.

Does anyone have any input on this topic? Real world experience with this provider, or satellite in general? Average data usage for a husband/wife? Also, while I know roughly what ping is, could someone better explain it and how it would effect me?

I have had exceed for about 6 months and it absolutely drives me bonkers. I have to reset the modem and router daily and the speeds are SUPER inconsistant. One minute I will be getting 6 megs down and the next NONE. It is so inconsistant in fact that I have purchased a verizon 4g hot spot to help with the times it isn't working....which is at least every other day that I cannot get service and I have to reset the modem. I have had the techs out here 2 times and I have called numerous times for help. They always tell me the same thing. It is not designed to be used with a router and they don't do any tech if you have a router in the line. The only way they say to get any kind of consistant speeds is to plug the modem directly into your computer. That means no wifi at all and you can only have net on 1 comp at a time. I have tried several different routers with no success. The last one I tried was over $100 as it was supposed to be the fastest. All that being said the thing that I CANNOT live with is the upload speed. No matter how good the download speed is acting on that particular day, the upload speed is slower than dial up....on speedtest.net I am getting .17mbps to .54mbps up. It takes over a minute to upload a small picture to a forum or to photobucket.

I mostly use my verizon hot spot for internet now unless I have something big to download...then I use exceed and let it take as long as it wants.

MY EXCEED SERVICE IS NEVER FASTER THAN MY VERIZON 4G HOT SPOT>>>I HAVE 4G AND 2-3 BARS OF SERVICE WHERE I AM

I wonder how having a router effects the service? I recently installed a WiFi router but have the main computer plumbed in through an ethernet port and have noticed no appreciable differences.

The bad thing is that VZW 4G isn't yet available in my area and prior to the microwave ISP I have now, I had VZW 3G service. For whatever reasons, their service degraded over time in spite of software, firmware and even hardware updates.

It really feels like we're in between a rock and a hard spot here...

A friend had a Canadian version of the microwave ISP and had exactly the same problems as you described. He ditched them. There isn't a lot of satellite internet up here anymore, and I don't know anyone who has it anymore, so I can't offer any advice on that.

I'm guessing you're in a rural area, and that's why you're stuck with obscure ISPs. Have you checked into cellular net ISPs? The friend who had the microwave ISP went to a cell net ISP through SaskTel, and it's worked well for him. It provides wireless internet in the house, too. The bandwidth limits are not great, but his speed is substantially better than the microwave ISP.
