Looking for a new car

Hyundai was never on my list but after looking at the new ones my mind has been changed.These are nice cars at an attractive price.
The new Genesis 3.8 track coupe is on my very short list.

Anyone bypassing them based on the brand name is imo doing themselves a real disservice.
 
Ford Fusion would be my choice...one auto magazine gave it the "Car of the Year".

I think Ford is making great strides in providing excellent vehicles...and they didn't take any government funds.

The Sonata would be my 2nd choice...IMO the Sonata will give the Accord and Camrey a run for the money...and will be very compeitive. With Sonata, I would wait a year and purchase a used one to take advantage of the depreciation.

I'm 5'10" 190 lbs and the Malibu didn't feel very roomy to me at all. On the other hand, the Fusion felt a lot roomier to me and would be my choice if I were to purchase a four-cylinder family sedan right now. The Impala is a fairly dated platform and I would consider such a vehicle at all. If you wanted a larger GM vehicle, then the new Lacrosse is a better choice.

My mom recently purchased an Altima with the V6. With gentle driving we have seen over 30 mpg, but realistically, in day-to-day lead foot driving (I mean, come on who doesn't drive a VQ35DE hard?) you'll probably see closer to 25-27. The four-cylinder isn't even worth looking at-- it's a turd. The CVT is fantastic with the V6, but is simply awful with the four-cylinder.

The Accord is big, on the noisier side, plus doesn't get great fuel economy. I'd pass on it.

An older 3800-equipped LeSabre or Park Ave will get 30 mpg highway easily, and have a ton of power around town. My 1999 LeSabre routinely gets >32 mpg highway at 65 mph. City mileage is about 20-22 mpg. Thank the super-tall 4th gear for that one...

If you're thinking new, I don't blame you one bit!

The LeSabre/Park Avenue is probably the one GM vehicle that I have been truly impressed with throughout the years in that it is difficult to believe that a car that size can get that kind of mileage. I have talked with several people who had them and found them to be trouble free cars. If I could find a nice used one at the right price, I wouuld strongly consider it.
 
I'd buy a four cylinder Accord stick, but that's just me.
There are a bunch of good choices in the mid to large segment.
Drive a few, and see what you'd prefer.
Maybe rent one for a week, and see what you think.
In five years, at 730/week or so, you'll amortize the purchase price, so a couple of grand either way is not a big deal.

I would look at a used car for that kind of commute, and I'd try a corolla or civic, cobalt, etc... I think the old rules of small or midsize or large have much different interior spaces for the driver are over. Also 40mpg should be possible which would be nice a $4+ gallon gas future.

It's all personal preference, I think. Either the 2.5L or 3.0L will be likely very long lived. The 3.5L will be tested, in the new Ford PI. You have to remember, I'm comparing most things I drive to my cavalier, so pretty much everything feels peppy and fast. The last fusion I drove was my uncle's 07 with the 2.3L, and it felt plenty fast for me.

You find the Accord bland but praise the Impala? The Impala is the definition of bland rental fleet mediocrity. The Malibu is the clear style and refinement leader over the stodgy Impala.
 
I'd be looking at the new LaCrosse with the 2.4 DI.

A larger, comfortable car with (probably) amazing highway fuel mileage. I can't see how you wouldn't 'win' with that one.....

Had 7 subarus - wouldnt wish them on anybody. Our '09 Forester X: windows wont go up and down, engine has loud knock, ride is bouncy, seating is bathtub low (I'm 6-1), body structure is shaky, aerodynamic are poor, highway mileage is only fair at best (25-26 at 75). Reliability is poor.

If I was to buy a Kia/Hyundai (on paper) it would be the Borrego V8. Big discount on these beasts. Have not driven one though - so dont know if its dynamically BLahhhH!
