Looking for a better alternative to Castrol EDGE 5w40

Definitely needs to define better. Open ended questions like this are useless.

OP what are you trying to improve?
Well, it is the same reason why you bought Valvoline XL-III 5W30. Why didn't you just stick with Castrol Edge LL 5W30 that you were using before? People just want better right?

I keep on forgetting that none of us is suppose to have our own opinion. I must have missed the memo on when you were crowned to be the first and the foremost authority in this subject. Moderator can go ahead and close this thread now that edyvw have made his opinion known.

Here is a shocker for you, your opinion is irrelevant to me.
How much PAO M1 has or Castrol or minimum HTHS VW requires, or what effect higher SAPS has, is not opinion, but fact.

Yes that is what I meant. At first I thought the Valvoline was less.

What are you talking about?
You stated that was what made it better. So I asked.

In that thread you posted, I quoted you and no response. It was a given that the Valvoline was at a higher cost for $26+ 5 qts jug. I even stated in that thread the Valvoline was few dollars more.

Go Castrol Edge 0W40.
But to be honest I would run in that engine VW504.00/507.00 oils such as Mobil1 ESP 0W30 or Mobil1 ESP 5W30.
I've wanted to try ESP 0w30 / 5w30 on my B48 X1 but old habits die hard and I keep using Edge Castrol 0w40 or LL01 Factory BMW fluid. Besides being lower saps, what are your thoughts and any benefit of ESP over GC BC 0w40/0w30 ?

B48 had some instances of LSPI. I would use LL01 like Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40. ESP 0/5W30 is also good option as it has MB229.52 which has LSPI test but no BMW approvals. I would use BMW approved oils either LL01 or LL04. Motul X-Clean 5W40 has both MB229.52 and LL04.
I am of opinion that LL01 or LL04 are not a must in older engines. But new ones, N20/26,B46/48 and B58 I would go with approved oils.

2017 VW Passat 1.8T - Just wondering if there is something superior I should use besides the factory Castrol EDGE 5w40...
The best engine protection for VAG engines is to be on the fixed interval regime and use the 502.00 0w-40 or 5w-40 oil so you're unwittingly killin' it (you're already doing this). Going high end on the oil filter will reduce engine wear more in terms of Castrol vs Mobil.

Castrol that you're using is a top tier oil but Mobil FS 5w-40/0w-40 is an option if you want to change brands.

Personally, when I've run the Shell Helix Ultra PurePlus 5w-40 in some VAG engined loan cars we have I've found the engine/valvetrain noise to increase after a few thousand miles. It's anecdotal I know but it doesn't happen with the Motul, Mannol or Fuchs that I've changed the Shell out for.

Had the same issue with Castrol Edge 5W40 in 2005 Passat 1.8T. Resolved with Castrol 0W30 and later 0W40.
