Looking For 10W-30 HDEO

I have re-sent them an email. We'll see what they say.

I've pretty much given up on it at this point...too difficult. I think I'm going to use regular ol' Castrol GTX, which is on the thicker side anyway of a 10w30. I haven't yet made my way to a Ford dealer, so I'll be sure to give them a call before I make any oil purchases.
 
I just called my Ford dealer -- they only carry the Motorcraft diesel oil in 15w40. I assume that NC is too warm for folks to actually be interested in a 10w30 diesel oil.
 
Found it -- at Wal-Mart!

I was picking up some 30W for my lawn equipment and just happened to notice that the shelf tag for the 30W Rotella actually said 10w30 Rotella. I thought, "hey I got a SKU here, they must have it!" I checked with them and they had about a pallet of the 1 gallon jugs of 10w30 in the back.

Woo-hoo! I can't count how many times I scoured the shelves at Wal-Mart to be sure I wasn't overlooking it. I was looking behind stuff and everything. I trusted the shelf tag to match the product. I never before noticed the shelf tag for the 30W wasn't actually for the 30W.

there is a Motorcraft 10w30 HDEO. we dont stock it, but i can order it. i work at a lincoln/mercury dealer. i usually have to order it by the case, which on most diesels you would need at least 1 case for an oil change
 
What is the price of that Amsoil? If I can get it for $15 delivered, it would be worth it to me. As it is, I only change oil once a year (only about 6000 mile yearly mileage). I buy the Shell Rotella for $9/qt, so including 7 quarts for the change and another quart used over the year, it's an $18 oil change (plus ACDelco filter).

Looks like the current list on the Amsoil is $26 a gallon, with some discount if you buy a case of four.

No doubt it's good oil, but the numbers don't work for me. I'm in exactly the same place as you: a truck that gets an annual change at 6-7K. I use the same oil in two farm tractors as well as the truck. I've done several used oil analysis using 15w40 R-T and the tractors and truck have come through very well with annual changes. I'm switching the truck and one tractor to the 10w30 R-T and will UOA them as well to get a baseline and see how that oil holds up. I'm also using the 10w30 in a couple of big riding mowers, so it simplifies my supply. I'm afraid to go witht he lighter oil on the big tractor because it has a ton of hours and gets worked very, very hard. When it works. I doesn't have to start in cold weather, so I'll keep it on 15w40.

I have a lot of respect for Amsoil products and have used (and still use) some of their products. Still, I figure a good UOA is a good UOA, whether I'm using $8.45/gal Shell or $26/gallon Amsoil and it leaves me more of my paychecks to spend on other things. If I felt the equipment needed it, I go with the Amsoil in a heatbeat. I've had the truck 20 years now with no problems, so with a good used oil analysis, I guess I can safely say the R-T has worked at least OK for me, huh?
 
Jim -- good to hear of your good experience with the Rotella. I've read nothing but good things about it here. I'm not even using it in a diesel engine...it's going into my gas-powered automobiles...both using distributorless ignition, roller follers on the cam(s), etc. By yesterday's standards, and even today's diesel standards, I'm sure they're incredibly "easy" on oil...especially a robust diesel oil.

I've also started using the Rotella SAE-30 in my lawn equipment. It only comes in the gallon jug at Wal-Mart, and with annual OCIs on that equipment also, that should last me a few years...

An alternative for the bulk type users who want 10w30 HDEO. Just by 10w HDEO and 15w40 HDEO of the same brand/line and blend yourself. This is what I did in my whacky Flexblend® motif. Bruce sorta said that's how it's done anyway ..but at different stages of the batching. Just assure that the 10w you're buying is indeed a HDEO (like Pennzoil Long Life) and not a hydraulic fluid. A visc calculator should guide you on getting the proper grade.

The good thing about it is that if it's too thin, you add 15w40 as make up. If it's too thick ..you add 10W (10w-20) as make up.

5 gallon pails for the 10w. You only need to buy the 15w40 in gallons.


I too would recommend looking at the Amsoil offering in HDEO in the 30 weights.
 
I just went to a brand new built walmart in town. they had a 8 10w30 rotalla T HDEO gallons. My suggestion would be to look for brand new walmarts or find a Supercenter that is huge. Not all supercenters are the same size
 
I was able to special order a 12 qt case of Rotella T 10W30 (SM, CJ-4) from the local Shell distributor. Will take 2-3 weeks to arrive.

What are they going to do drill a 10w30 oil well? you can get Amsoil delivered in way way less time.

Maybe it's because he wanted SM? I've never seen the Rotella SM variety around here. The SL is common in all of the farm stores...
 
I saw some 10w30 Shell Rotella at a shell gas station today in gallon containers for around $15.99. I was tempted to get some

I used 10w30 HDEO in an old Honda Civic EX and the engine purrrrrred like a kitten.
 
Currently running Rotella 10-30 in my Rendezvous, switching from Havoline conventional 5-30. The gallons are available at Rural King here in Illinois, 8.97 a gallon. I've always liked Rotella. My Dad worked for a Shell distributor at one time. I ran a 1995 Merc Villager 210,000 trouble free miles on the stuff. The distributor closed, Dad passed, and Hav was readily available. Now that I have a reasonable, reliable source for it, I'm switching back. For winter, I'll blend it down slightly with 5-20. A 3/2 Rotella to Formula Shell gives me a typical 5-30 weight spread, according to the visc calculator. I'll run it straight in the summer. I do remember the Villager turning over a tad slower in really cold weather when Rotella was run straight, but the blend will address that. Good oil, very robust, and no sludge at 200k when disassembled for timing belt replacement on the Villager.
 
Moreover, why would one want to run a XXW-30 in a current diesel engine.
The biggest single advancement in diesel engine and component life was the change from 30 weight to 15w40 multi-grade oils. Class 8 diesel engine life went from 300,000 miles =/- to approaching 1,000,000 miles, with a simple oil change....
So it is very difficult for me to see a discussion of 30 weight diesel engine oils...

Murrays sells Motorcraft HDMO in quarts of 10w30 and 15w40. Since Murrays is part of CSK, one of the other stores in that group may be able to get it for you. Or try local Ford dealer. They surely should be able to order it.
