We have a 2001 BMW 325i with an automatic and 150,000 miles. I wonder if we needed to rebuild the transmission with a rebuild kit, how long do rebuilt automatics usually last. Do rebuilds solve most issues that a malfunctioning transmission might have ?

Automatic transmission life is all over. Rebuilt units vary even more.

Some transmissions run 200,300K from the factory and consistently can't make 50K on a good rebuild.

What problems are you having with it?

Everything depends on they guy doing the job. not every part is included with rebuild kits.
Hard parts and solenoids, valve body valves and possibly sleeves are all extra. Knowing what good and whats iffy is the trick.

That being said if the guy really knows the unit and is good the rebuild can easily outlast the original sometimes by a wide margin if he uses upgraded parts.
IMO leave well enough alone except for fluid and filters unless it has issues.

The only thing you can do for any transmission is keep clean lubricant in it from the start. Which is why I flush all of mine every 50,000 miles. That's it. If it fails it is not from lack of maintenance.

I had one fail in a 70's Chevy fail at 8K.

It seems with the AW-4 and A340 transmissions, they will run 300K from teh factory. But even the best transmission shops ... they won't last long.

I know a few people that have paid for a good rebuild on 700R4, 4L60s rebuilt after 200K miles and they're done in another 30K miles.

This is a perfect response. Not all builders are created equal. A good builder will know all the ins and outs, the shortcomings and strengths of that unit and can often assemble a unit that will outlast a new OE transmission.

If there is nothing wrong with yours, continue the good maintenance.

It is running fine. We just bought it and the ATF has never been changed. We have always had manuals and this one is for our teen who's learning to drive.

As usual spot on!

Friend who sold transmission rebuild parts said he could tell the quality of a shop's work by the type of rebuild kits they bought. The good shops buy the expensive kits with many more parts. So, ask the shop what they replace.

That's a good point. Most shops will reply with, "whatever it needs," which isn't always helpful.

Research a DIY fluid change and change the fluid. I don't know anything about BMW, but if it has a dipstick it should be pretty easy. If not, a trusted mechanic with a good reputation will be able to figure it out. Many won't touch auto trannsmissions though because of liability. This is the reason many recommend doing nothing, they don't want to be the last to touch it.

If it is running without obvious problems then all you need to do is change the fluid, no need to spend big $ rebuild what is working.
