I plan on a 20 hour road trip in a month. Leaving Cleveland ambients ought to be around 60, then spending 10 days in FL where it ought to be low 80's.

I have only a few hundred miles on the Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 in there. I have tried Mobil 1 5w30 or 0W-40 in this engine and get a lot of noise, so especially in the summer the 10W-40 seems to work really well.

Car runs pretty good. Idling in traffic for long it heats up and the fans kick on, pretty normal it seems. Running on highway I see 192 all day.

But around here the highways are flat. In KY and TN I'll be seeing some long, steep grades. Would you add any moly, through some Valvoline Synpower treatment?? Would that help keep temps down and power up?

Also, I was going to run an UOA on this oil when I got back. If I add VSOT will that throw off the numbers and screw it up?

For the winter I will go back to either 0W-40 or 5w30 Mobil 1, or perhaps a mix of those two since Mobil 1's 30 weight is so light.

Thanks
Brian

Oh ..go-hayade ..let's see what type of moly uptake occurs over your trip.

Is the oil gonna have some decent miles on it ..or is this is fresh fill that will be in for about 40-50 hours of use

Oil has like 300 miles on it now. It will gain 600 miles at approx 70mph one day. Then another 600 miles @ 70 the next day. Then 9 days of city driving in Florida. Followed by almost 20 hours non stop highway back home.

Then the drain, which should be around the 3.5k mile mark.

I'm not a big additive guy. If it's just money down the drain plug I'd rather not. If it's really gonna free up a few HP and help the engine run a hair easier, then I guess it'd be worth it. I've read other threads of people boasting how well it works on long highway trips.

Maxlife has a good additive package already...but VSOT seems to work well enough for me.

Smart money say leave everything alone.

But the bitog compulsion says 'why not add 1 oz now and 1 oz every 1000 miles'?

My car? I'd add the VSOT.

Littleton eh?

Maybe we should try a Colorado 'Group Buy' of Specialty Forumulation products!

I have no doubt that Molakule makes great stuff, but the shipping makes it spendy.

Any interest in a group buy?

If it is the SM Maxlife, the product data sheets indicate 290 ppm moly already in it.

Took two similar trips this year involving the Pocono & Catskill Mountains. Used a full bottle of VSOT just prior with both vehicles I used. Both contained synthetic oils. Drove around 4600 miles both trips combined -- never used any oil. Amazing stuff for trips like yours.

This is not snake oil. This contains more of what's already in your engine. It will raise your vicosity number by (1) so you may want the 10w30 instead. First OC should see a full bottle... half-bottle dose for OCIs afterwards. There's an analysis on it over on the Virgin Oil board. See/decide for yourself.

A typical 10w30 has a viscosity of 10.5 cSt at 100C. Adding about half the bottle of VSOT would be expected to raise that to 11.5 cSt. Anything from around 9.5 to 12.5 cSt is a 30 weight. A whole bottle of VSOT might make your 10w30 borderline to a 10w40 (ranges about 12.6 cSt to about 16 cSt. (See the API Engine Oil chart for the exact numbers.) Typical 10w40 is 14 cSt at 100C, so again, you probably will still have a 40 weight, but a thicker one.

When people say VSOT will raise the viscosity number by 1, do they mean my:
10W-40 becomes 11W-41?
or
10W-40 becomes 15W-50?
or
10W-40 becomes 10W-50?
