When I worked at Radio Shack many moons ago, people would come into our store looking all frantic, because their key fobs wouldn't work and they couldn't get into their car after returning from another store in the same plaza. Sure, we'd sell them a new battery, and they would act like we are their savior because they really had no idea how to get into their car without a working remote.
During the great blackout of 2003, I knew people who made it out to be that 6 hours with no power was like 6 days. They were astounded that I could open my garage door by pulling the rope, cooked my dinner after lighting the gas stove with a match, kept light with battery powered lights and oil lamps, and listened to the local news on the battery powered radio. Still others had no idea how to stay entertained because they had no TV or internet. Me? I read a book. When it got dark, I got my telescope out and enjoyed a rare opportunity of using it without noise pollution. They looked at me like I was nuts.
