I think this would be good for the locks on your house that are in secluded areas away from main views like backyard doors inside garage doors where those looking to break in can have time to pick locks out of view.

I wouldn't use this on every lock because you would most likely be locked out of your house in the event they try multiple doors, although I'm sure they would give up after the first door maybe?

It's an interesting mod...

oldhp,
you can get a whole assortment of picking kits on ebay...some of them have clear locks so you can see what you are doing.

For under $50 US, you can have hours of fiddling while the family watch the idjit box.

The front/rear doors I had installed about 5 years ago came with a thick metal plate in the door jam, which has long screws driven into the studs beside it so it's not relying on a small thin piece of wood for the striker / deadbolt.

I was told at the time this prevents it. It wasn't that much more to do it this way.

I have been watching this guys channel for a while. Some pretty impressive stuff there, shows how unsecured locks really are for one that has the knowledge and tools to do it.
They keep the honest people honest and slow down most thieves, but if they want it, they can get it.

I too have one of the clear locks for learning on. I have picked a few locks (padlock and deadbolts) just for fun.
I also messed up one of my deadbolts doing it (key would not work after I picked it, but picking would still lock and unlock it).

locks only keep out honest people

If you live in a high crime area fence your yard and have dogs.

My aunt used to live in a bad neighborhood in KC. They put in cross bars on the front door. Bars on all the windows. Fenced back yard with 2 dobermans. They went in and out thru the back yard, gave the dogs more attention.

One morning they found a size 14 nike tennis shoe the dogs had for a new play toy. They got raw meat with a big ole bone it that day.

When we used to visit her, she had a shopping cart, you unloaded ALL the stuff from you car, including the floor mats, hubcaps, spare and jack. Put in the car and took to the backyard in a shed. Leave your car unlocked so hopefully they do not break the window. You do not want to have anything other than a factory am/fm radio. one time next morning the car barely started because they left the glovebox door open and they took the cigarette lighter. I was so glad when she moved.

She was never robbed after they got the dogs

The last burglar I had wasn't very smart. He bent the deadbolt bracket so bad that the door couldn't be opened, not even by kicking. He tried to take the glass out but I caught him before he had a chance to get in.

I was thinking of installing a second deadbolt on both doors that is controllable by a smart phone app in addition to the dumb keyed lock that is already there and then just not install the key-side on the outside but just install the thumb-turn on the inside. This would be a secondary lock only accessible on the outside by our smart-phones or inside by the thumb-turn.

At first I was worried about what happens if the batteries die in this lock but I thought well I have one at the back door as well and the chances they both die at the same time is highly unlikely.

Just for extended absences like when traveling for work or on vacation or something.
