Load testing with the battery in the car?

I realize this is an amateur question but I actually haven't ever gotten a daily driver's battery load tested before -- the load tests I've gotten were for spare vehicles where I just took the battery out and brought it with me on normal errands.

I've heard that auto parts stores will load test batteries, test alternators, etc. while they're "in the car". Does this mean the test runs while the battery is hooked up, or does it just mean the battery is still sitting in the engine bay but must be unhooked?

Just trying to gauge whether I need to write down my radio presets or plug in a memory saver or something when I get the battery tested. Wouldn't want to fry anything!

You can test batteries while still in the car.
This is normal, actually.
Before you get it tested, make your own checks. Loose battery? This is a battery killer. Water level up to normal? If it's low, you can't just fill it and get it tested - it has to be charged. Cable connections and where they seat? Both ends of all cables should be perfect.
Warm weather 'Southern' batteries don't last as long as 'Northern' batteries. Hot weather needs southern batteries. Yes, they do make two different types. How old is yours? 5-7 is normal.

It's only 3.5 years old. It actually works fine and voltages seem to read fine after sitting overnight etc. I figured it wouldn't hurt to get it checked given the "eye" has died (which I posted on previously).

I must confess though, lazily I haven't checked the water level yet (maintenance free battery although I realize that doesn't mean you can't maintain it).
