Can not get my tablet (next book and kindle) to act like a usb device where you can access files and directories. I can plug my camera and remote drives in and Linux recognizes them. I have 14.10 but it occurred in other versions. Is it because of the micro plug for the tablets?

OK thanks..I really don't know. Every time I need to do something in ubuntu I need to get my son to do it. I have been using ubuntu for years and years and have yet to figure out how to use it. But thanks I will ask my son about that.

What happens when you plug your tablet into your Ubuntu system? If the answer is "nothing", then I wonder if using a different USB slot on your system would give a different result. Does your tablet do anything upon insertion of the USB cable into the Ubuntu system?
You can also set in Android (and presumably Kindle) how the device will present itself to an OS: The options are, if I recall, "Camera" and "MTP device". In the Android 4+ devices I have here, each time I plug them into a USB slot on a computer I can select how the device behaves. Kindle is Android-based (and Android is Linux!) so I would assume that there is a similar function on a Kindle device.
Does that same tablet function when plugged into a Windows or Mac system? If not, there may be a setting (USB Debugging comes to mind) that may need to be looked at on your Android/ Kindle device. If so, I'll bet you just need two very small pieces of software on your system; detailed immediately below in bold face...

uc: Its not the USB slot and I have ubuntu on both comuters. Doesn't do anything on either computer. I don't know if it works on Windows.One computer has a fresh installation of 14.04 the other is 12.04. Mostly I am pretty ignorant about ubuntu.

With the newer Androids you have to use MTP to get files in/out of them. They removed the code that made it act as a USB memory device.
